American Record Company Sues for file swapping

I was reading there the american record industry was sueing university students for swapping music files.

Does anyone know any more information about this?

Basically they are sueing the students who are /sharing/ a lot of music. Only in the USA atm

Afaik no one has been sued yet, they just issued subpoenas to some colleges demanding the names and addresses of filesharers. One college **** themselves and caved in immediately, but the better ones have told the RIAA were to stick their subpoena cause it violates student privacy laws. Google "RIAA + MIT"

I work for a UNI and can confirm that they at present (THE RIAA etc.) are "Just" sending the warning letters. One guy from my job got an ""official warning"" after sharing some movie on Kazaa, then came the letter to the boss man, then came the revoke of the direct ip, (soon to be campus wide) then welcome proxy server that doesnt allow lotsa stuff, welcome to ****tyinternetville........

personally I am upset the guy got an official warning, secondly I am upset the uni didnt tell the riaa where to get off.

In June, Jesse Jordan, a 19-year-old college student who became one of the first to be hit with a lawsuit by the RIAA. Jordan settled his case by paying $12,000 to the RIAA.

Well there are 60 million filesharers in America, so they'll be busy over there for a while yet. Hopefully long enough for new legislation to be introduced to fix this whole mess.

The laws only apply in America, mp3 sharing like afaik.
Irish government havn't even heard of mp3 yet i wud imagine
