Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What is the biggest knock-out cup competition in club football in the world?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Hairy Homer

By the way. I just want to point out that I don't think anyone has answered (correctly) the question about the club that has been in the top flight in England for the longest period.

I'm pretty sure Everton is NOT the right answer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

It is not. The FA cup largest ever number of entries was just under 700. This competition has over 700 every season.

With approximately 700 teams taking part each year the Statoil FAI Junior Cup is the largest competition of its kind anywhere in Europe and reaches into every local community in Ireland.

I think its Mick Martin or Don Givens, both were sent off twice while playing for Ireland and both also played for Manchester United. The own goal bit i dont know.

The FAI Statoil Junior Cup - already the biggest competition of its kind in the world - is set to get even bigger after the FAI Junior Council agreed to open up the competition to all clubs except those in intermediate divisions.

At the first meeting of the Junior Council after the FAI Junior Council's AGM on Monday, June 16, the following rule changes to next season's competition were implemented.

    · The competition will now be open to all clubs from all divisions from all Leagues except intermediate divisions.

    · Teams from the top junior division of their League and only the top division that is nominated by that League will enter the competition at the third round stage. League secretarties should inform the cup committees as to which division they are nominating. Teams should highlight if they are from the nominated top division of their League on the cup entry from so as they will not be entered into the draw until round three.

This means that for the first time, teams from lower than Division Two will be allowed to enter with entries expected to top the 900 mark this season compared to last season's total of 750.

    Taken from here

It was indeed Mick Martin. Scored for Turkey in a 1-1 draw in a Euro championship qualifier in 1974 (while he was with United) and then was sent off in the return game in 1975.

He was one of four players sent off after a mass brawl during a world cup qualifier in Bulgaria 1977 and then he scored for Spain in a Euro championship qualifier in 1982.

And i believe Noel Campbell was his partner in crime that night!

Staying on the theme of Irish players then:
Which football pundit got more ireland caps and how many?
    Frank Stapleton?
    Eamon Dunphy?
    John Giles?
    Liam Brady?
    Mark Lawrenson?
    Ray Houghton?
    Andy Townsend?

And while your at it who got least?

Well I reckon Dunphy got the fewest.
The most, I'd say would be either Brady or Giles. I'll go for Brady.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭celticfc

    I go for Johnny Giles.

    Dunphy got the fewest alright!
But as for the most you still havent got it.
Hint: He played for Oxford, A Prem Club(old 1st Division), An other Prem Club, Crystal palace and Reading!
And he has two world cup goals to his name!

It was Ray Houghton with 73 caps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭Sundy

    Cool, ok here's my question.

Which footballer made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland in a game as an 85th minute substitute, lasted til fulltime and then NEVER played for the senior side again? (making surely for one of the shortest international careers of all time?)

(Clue : It wasn't a friendly match either)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,003 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

Brian Carey or the unfortunate Sadlier?
