Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Pierce O'Leary
    Austin Hayes

I give up. Come on then, tell us the answer before this all dies on its arse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Wasn't either of them either :)

Ok, since it's been 3 days now and no ones got it I'll reveal the answer. The footballer was Southamptons Michael Evans who played against Romania in a world cup qualifier at Lansdowne in 1997.

    New question please......

    Jimmy Magee? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

'fraid not. Darragh's too young, and Jimmy did TV.

No, he was the main radio man from the 30's to the 80's, really up to Euro 1988.

OK Somebody mentioned Richie Partridge in another thread.

If he ever gets capped he will become the third 'bird' to play soccer for Ireland. (republic of)

    Name the other two

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

    Glenn Crowe is one anyway.

    How about Turkey Breen? :p

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,884 Mod ✭✭✭✭celticfc

How about Glenn Crowe & Michael Robinson ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Hairy Homer

Crowe is one. As for the others.....don't be unkind!

Clue is he was another LOI player from the 60s (or maybe early 70s).

Think birds' names rather than great players. I'd never heard of him either.

I seem to remember hearing that a guy called Maurice (or perhaps Michael) Swan played for Ireland ..... so that'll be my guess.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Hairy Homer

..and you'd be correct Pigman. Swan is the right answer.

    Gi's a question.

In relation to World Cup Finals tournements (of soccer that is - in case you thinking rugby or yachting or whatever :) ), what do the scores beside each of the teams mean?

    Argentina 3-0
    Belgium 1-0
    Brazil 3-0
    Bulgaria 1-0
    England 0-2
    France 1-2
    Germany 3-0
    Holland 0-1
    Italy 0-3
    Mexico 0-2
    Republic of Ireland 1-1
    Romania 0-2
    South Korea 1-0
    Spain 1-2
    Sweden 1-0
    Yugoslavia 0-1

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

what they won/lost or drew by?

    won 3-0
    won 1-0
    won 3-0
    ....
    ....
    lost 2-1 etc..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

    Nope, that's not it Kaimera.

Don't want to say to much in case it totally gives it away but what I will say is to study all the teams on the list then ask yourself 'why have these particular teams been mentioned - and not any others?' That will give you a clue as to what the scores represent.

(BTW I just noticed an error in those numbers up there. For Brazil it should read 2-1 instead of 3-0, and for France it should read 2-1 instead of 1-2)

Is it that the number on the left is the amount of matches they won & on the right are the games they lost before they got to the last 16 of the world cup ?

    Is it penalty shoot outs?
Argentina won 3 and lost 0
Ireland won 1 (WC 1990) and lost 1 (WC 2002)

    PH01 is correct!

    Next question please ......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,120 ✭✭✭PH01

How many horses, and name them, have won any of the flat racing classics (1000\2000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger ) two years in a row?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Hairy Homer

    Is this a trick question?

Is the answer none, because each of these races is for horses of a certain age, and therefore it's impossible to enter any of them in two different years?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,120 ✭✭✭PH01

    Yip, it's a trick question.
The English Classic races - the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger - are restricted to 3-year-olds, so no horse can win them two years in a row. This is the most important year for a Flat horse as this is the 'Classic' year.

    Your go HH.

Two countries have four clubs in the group stages of this year's Champions League. (Italy and Spain, surprise surprise)

Three countries have three clubs—England, France and one other.

    Who is the third country?

One guess each and no Googling.
