  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Ah boo. :( I thought this one had legs!

Yes, Alan Sunderland in 1979, Trevor Brooking (lowest header ever!) in 1980 and Ricardo Villa in 1981, scorers of the winning goal in the FA Cup of those years.

Up ye go to the oche, my man!

    Yer too fast Bucks!

    You're correct.

CARDIFF BLUES and LLANELLI SCARLETS are new in name but that's about it. Both have evolved from their clubs in the Welsh RU shake-up.

    Your go.

Similar theme and is probably too easy.

How many times have Munster lost in the European Cup or Celtic League at Thomond Park?

Tiger Woods' real name is Eldrick.

Seeing as I'm not here too often, I'll leave you with the website where you can find the answer, so you won't have to wait for me to tell you you're right.

5 clubs have won the old English first division the season after being promoted from the second. Who are they?

Or do you mean some other world cup? like the Rugby world cup?

Jules Rimet was president of FIFA when the World Cup was created. Thats why its named after him.

    No idea who designed it.

The Jules Rimet trophy was designed by Abel Lafleur?

Had to look that one up in the end. Well it was going for a full day and nobody got it right.

Good question Mossy, you should go again.

Lord Anorak here again. I'll think you'll find it was the 1958 World Cup.

For that bit of totally useless clarification I'm going to throw in another silly question. Variation on a previous theme.

Which of these birds has NOT played rugby for Ireland. (one guess each and Google away to your hearts' content)

    Crowe
    Partridge
    Rook
    Sparrow

    (Spellings only slightly amended )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,986 ✭✭✭Big Ears

im not much of a rugby fan but il go with sparrow (a complete guess) well done to pigman2 for the just fontaine answer.

    I go with Rook

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

I'll go for Crowe because the other 3 sound like poncy upperclass surnames that rugby players might have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Hairy Homer

    All wrong so far.

There were in fact four Crowes who played rugby for Ireland, the most recent being in 1974, and who was the son of one of the other ones.

W Sparrow of Dublin University won two caps in 1893 and 1894

CB Rooke, also of Dublin University, won 19 caps between 1891 and 1897. If he was playing today he'd probably have about 50.

So you don't have to be Wittgenstein to work out that Partridge was the correct answer.

    OK Another question.

Of the Irish youth soccer team who came third in the under 20 World Cup in 1998 (or was it 1997?) only two of the players went on to become full internationals.

    Name them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

    Partridge by any chance

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Glen Crowe and Duff by my reckoning?

BTW, whilst were on the subject does anyone have a url for info on this squad (in particular what happened to their careers afterwards?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,986 ✭✭✭Big Ears

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭LizardKing

A lot of them are playing in the national league Thomas Morgan and Colin Hawkins et al ....

I'll go for Duff and Doherty ...

    Tcha Ching. Pigman scores again.

There used to be a Website for this tournament and I had downloaded the squad details some years ago. But then some northside skanger nicked my notebook and only 'essential corporate data' ie not my sports trivia or MP3 collection, had been backed up.

Most of the Irish squad either stopped playing altogether or are in the league of Ireland. Colin Hawkins, Thomas Heary, Dessie Baker, Trevor Molloy etc

As for the England squad that got knocked out at the quarter final stage. It included Michael Owen, Stephen Gerrard, Kieron Dyer, Matthew Upson and I think a few others that made it to full international level.

    Nice one!

Ok, here's another world cup question (cos I like em).

What do all these teams have in common?

    1974 Scotland

    1978 Brazil

    1982 England & Cameroon

    1986 Brazil & Mexico

    1990 Italy

    1998 Italy & Belgium

2002 Spain & Republic of Ireland

All were unbeaten but went out on either penalties or goal difference?
