ComReg drops redundant broadband frequency plan

THE Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) has decided not to go ahead with plans that would allow mobile phone operators to use part of their frequencies to provide broadband wireless services. In a statement, ComReg said there was not enough interest to pursue the plans and that, in effect, 3G already facilitates broadband.

It added that revised proposals which removed the requirement for fixed antennae on customer premises also gained only qualified support.

Mobile operators had the potential to use up to 20pc of their GSM 1800MHz frequencies for other services that could have helped combat the weak broadband infrastructure in Ireland and slow take-up of services.

The statement said that the mobile phone operators had sought additional requirements that "would have resulted in a service which was indistinguishable in key aspects from a mobile telecommunications service, for which other licensing agreements already apply".

Chairperson of ComReg Etain Doyle added: "The Commission will continue to look for opportunities to facilitate the delivery of broadband wireless access services, and wish to leave open the possibilities outlined in the original paper."

Ailish O Hora is talking thru her arse more like or else the Sub Editor in the Indo is a muppet (nothing new there) .

Comreg have not dropped it, they have selved it. the Mobile operators may reenter a proposal and the frequencies are still there if the proposals are acceptable to Comreg.

It may be Nomadic but MUST not be mobile.

Why the hell not, what's the flawed thinking behind this? If I were them, I would make that a condition (alright perhaps not a condition, but you get my drift)... Or are they concerned that Ireland might actually get a service that's superior compared to what is available in the UK?
