Hope of The States – Irish debut, October 3rd at Whelans

Sam Herlihy - vocals / guitar / piano
Ant Theaker - guitar / piano / organ
    Jimi Lawrence - guitar
    Paul Wilson - bass
    Mike Sidell - violin
    Simon Jones - drums

HOPE OF THE STATES release their new single, entitled 'Enemies; Friends', through Sony in late September (Sept 19th in Ireland), and head out on series of UK & Ireland headline dates, kicking off with their show at Whelans on Friday, October 3rd.

In between touring, the Chichester six-piece will be rehearsing and recording songs for their debut album, slated for release in the first part of 2004.

Their line-up expands to include two projectionists and a violin player live.

"Tracks like 'Black Dollar Bills', 'George Washington' and 'Black Amnesias' recall the epically eerie sounds of Mercury Rev's 'Deserters Songs', Spiritualized and, oddly, The Waltons. Intellectual, political and hugely ambitious, the whole thing will translate magnificently onto a grander stage - it's not a question of if, but when” - NME

"One of the most extraordinary debut singles in years"
    - The Sunday Times

This most recent set of Hope of The States demos featured what became group's debut single, 'Black Dollar Bills'. Recorded at Rockfield with producer Hugh Jones it was released on the Seeker label (catalogue number SEEK001) on March 24th and quickly sold out of its limited edition, each-copy-lovingly-handsewn-into-a-hessian-wallet run. Copies of the single are now changing hands for up to $50 on eBay.

In the meantime, Hope of The States have been setting out on the road for live dates. After shows with Starsailor, Granddaddy, and The Polyphonic Spree, the band have been playing their first headline shows - including a rapturously-received and sold-out show at London's ICA - and made their festival debut at Glastonbury last month as well as appearing at the Carling Weekend in Leeds (August 22nd) and Reading (August 24th).
