College Firewall Tunnelling

Just looking for people's experiences using software like HTTP Tunnel on college networks..

What kind of transfer rates do you get using filesharing apps?

Is it a good idea to use this software (probably on personal laptop) I imagine it's easy enough for admins to track packets going to tunnel servers... Do they care?

Tunnelling IM clients and games seems ok but filesharing would visibly suck up bandwidth...

    Thanks

I use HTTP Tunnel in work, only at night mind when b/w is not so precious. Regularly see over 100kB/s on Kazaa (sharing disabled). IM is fine but I don't think HTTP Tunnel supports UDP packets yet, so no good for gaming, most games anyhoo. Mind you, most laptops are sh1te for games anyway.

I should mention the above speeds are on the paid service which is only about $3-$5 dollars/month I think. The free service, if it still exists is limited to 3kB/s.

I heard there's a HTTP Addon for Kazaa. Does this mean it uses IE's port 21 instead of sock5, so you don't have to use any tunnelling software?

They blocked the IP's of HTTP Tunnel's server(s) in DCU because some many ppl were using it. Apparently they got a 'cease and desist' letter from sony.

Depends on which college and how fascist their admins are... there;s a couple of services out there, but most of them require a payment for anything but the most rudimentary of services.

Also, in TCD, you have to log into the firewall, so if they cop on, its gonna have you username all over the logs. Not sure how this is handled in other colleges.

Does anyone know if anywhere has reaced the point of filtering all HTTP traffic through websense?

I'm surprised computing services in UCD haven't - they're a pack of fascists.

    Not mine.

p4, 2.4 512DDR, radeon 7500 32meg... mind you the gfx card and the fact that it is a pentium is a lil off, but in HL i run at 100 fps solid in 1024x768 :)

You can only get 2k using HTTPTunnel unless you purchase the full program which will aloow you up to 70k or.. i think as fast as your line will go.

As i said on the CS boards, there are ways, you just have to mess about with HLTunnel and try different tunneling programs. There was a good one but i cant remember the name of it

Try having a look at this post i made AGES ago here

I bypassed alot of stuff in Tallaght last year.

IRC can be bypassed in two ways, the easiest to in set the firewall options to "Proxy" and just enter in your college proxy details.
Another way is to download a program called "Httport" which you can configure an IRC server to, and then join that server in IRC using /connect 127.0.0.1

Httport isn't great for webpage tunnelling though, as pictures dont get shown, only text, and you may only get 1 k/sec MAX, unless you find a good public proxy.

For Kazaa I used Socks2http, which did the job great.
Works better for small files though <20mb. As larger ones >100 always seem to stop on the last kilobyte.

Pretty easy to configure. Just set the port you want to use in Sock2http (I used 11111), and set Kazaa to point to 127.0.0.1 port 11111.

Then disconnect from kazaa and reconnect and it should connect.
The biggest problem with it is there is not many sources, and alot of the downloads wont start, but you can get up to 100k.

When installing them programs, it's best to install them at home and then copy them onto a cd or whatever, and then drag the folders across to the drive you need. Some colleges block kazaa from being installed, so it's good to have it preinstalled on a CD.

A lot of webpages that are blocked can be accessed simply by having an alternate address for the site. Boards was blocked, but the muppet address worked.

Also simple things like using the Google cache should also still work.

For things that you need to log into, like Hotmail anf Vodafone, these are something simply blocked by the Admin just setting the default connection type for IE to disallow you do access the site.
Just set up the Proxy to use the same proxy for all connection types in the Internet options tab.

Use a program like getright to suck up all the college bandwidth by using it to segregate the files into 4 parts (or 8 depending if you can find mirrors), this will allow you to get speeds of up to 250k when there are a few people using it. (I'm such a bastard)

On my campus there is a transparent proxy which means i can only receive information through port 80 basically.
Its really effective, cant even play yahoo pool :( , can use irc but dcc sends wont work ....no file sharing programs work apart from kazaa by using the option " use port 80 for incoming connections"

But em this year i intend on getting around it.
    by doing this :
When i go to download something from a site, it sends the file to someone elses server or computer or something and then from his/her computer or whatever to me throught port 80
anyone know any more info about this? and where would i find a person to do that?

there is an other way of doing it without a lot of extra software, but you do need port 22 open (ssh) and a machine somewhere else with a SSH daemon. you can set up a ssh tunnel over a network (in this case the internet) and you can get a good speed. i had access to the ssh server in TCD and used it on dial up. certin downloads (rh docs cd @ 500mb) came in quite quick at over 30k/s ON DIALUP!!! this was done though compression. only thing is overhead. im now on broad band at home and tried it reciently. now getting close to 60k insted of my usual 80. http tunnel is pretty cool. using it now for msn messanger and stuff in my work who have blocked port 22. and i can access port 22 now too. only thing is the free service is caped to 1.5k/s so downloads though http here is still quicker (1mb dedicated line).

Just use www.easynews.com. It'll give you everything your looking for on Kazaa and you download via port 80 which wont be blocked. You can dump all the files you want to download into a zip file so no one knows what your downloading.

I bought http tunnel for a month but was still getting same crap speed :(

Sounds like you didn't have it set up right/ entered your key wrong.
Were you getting slow speeds on every single thing you tried d/ling? Obviously the likes of Kazaa and WinMX are just as dependant on the bandwidth of the person you're d/ling from.
I regularly see single source d/ls over 100kB/s and have had multiples which added up to over 200 on occasion.

I jus got thro the firewall in my college today using kazaalite and either socks2http or httptunnel. i had both running at the same time and i dunno which it was working with. i think it was httptunnel cas it had a massive log created.

only problem is that after two d/ls at arounf 20k it disconnected and i couldnt reconnect! any ideas? i cant think why?
