Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I heard ppl saying wireless isnt great for games. Can anyone actually verify this for me and explain why its not.

And also if anyone is using Digiweb`s wireless, which is the only option i have to get broardband as my fone line wont be available for BB for yrs, can they tell me there experience with them. Theres a 6 gig cap on digiweb, but wudnt bother me too much as i`d only be downloading game demos, patches, few songs, ect... Wudnt be downloading episodes or anything like that. As long as it would play games online with decent pings i`d be more than happy.

In an ideal world, wireless would be the lowest pings, and best speeds.

However this is not always true. This may take a while to explain... bear with me

As its wireless, there are no exchanges, so your contention ratio will generally always fill up. BUT this will not affect you too much, as the ISP should have enough bandwidth to satisfy your donwload and gaming needs.

Technically, it takes about 5ms to send a packet to the gatewaty computer, 0.6 ms to reach the fibre, and then about another 10ms to reach boards .ie, 10 back olong the track, 0.6 ms back to the gateway computer, and 5ms back to your copmputer, which is about 30ms for a ping to boards.

In game pings are higher than this, as more packets must be sent per second, this is true for all connection types.

So as you can see, wireless is at least as good as any other connection type.

There is also the added advantage that either you havea a signal or you don;t have a signal, so either you can reach full 512 speeds, or you get no speed. You won't be limited by line qualirt or anything.

The contention ratio is 24 to 1 as opposed to 42 to 1 that the BB thru a fone line seems to be. So wireless has an advantage there aswell then?
I can see the mast from my house, so theres no probs there.

Also, theres the advantage that you can cancel your foneline and make really cheap online calls. if ya want....

And yes, wireless has lesser contention, so it'll always be better that most dsl.

But doesn't DSL spread the contention ratio at the exchange, as in, the contention ratio is 48/1, but you will always be placed on the port with the least amount on it. Whereas with Wireless, if there are 20 people connected at the same point, then it is full, rather than spread the load, it justs fills up.

well with wireless, everyone on the tallaght tower connects to the tallaght tower, cotention wouold be sorted there, so i'd imagine that who you'll be in contention with would be quite dynamic.

I'm on Leap wireless BB, during the day when all the businesses are online the ping times are fairly crap, but come 6-6.30 it rocket down, we can have 4 people playing with no notable difference...I would certainly recommend them to anyone who can afford them...their level of customer service is excellent (altough it was a bit shakey to start of with) ....and just to let you know I don't work them!!! we normally get pings of about 60-90 to most servers in the uk/Europe if its a Irish server we sometimes get as low as 35 :)
