This might sound like a silly question but who knows of any decent well kitted independent engine tuners ie they have exhaust gas analyisis and the like. My car needs a makeover but I'm trying to avoid a trip to a Mercedes main dealer...if you know of someone post here regardless of how far from Wateford they are! We might get a useful list together....

Westward Engineering, with 2WD and 4WD rolling roads.

Located in Enfield, run by a nice guy called Martin Treacy ?

There's a new crowd in Waterford called Xtreme Autos or some such. They do rolling-road tuning. I'm not sure what your requirements are exactly, but these kinds of people usually do aftermarket piggy-back fuel computers.

It looks a bit boy racer, I suspect they would'nt be interested in setting up the fuel-air mix on my Merc 190e somehow...they proberly dont have a gas analyser.

Any garage that claims to do the Pre-NCT test should also have a gas analyser, my local garage does, and its usually only a case of turning a screw on the air mass meter(or other) to correct the air/fuel ratio assuming there is no air leaks from either the intake/exhaust system.

Also assume you've checked or better changed the plugs & air filter as these also make a big difference to the emissions.

I can send you the number for the garage i use if you want as i've seen them sorting things i would have thought untunable.

Mike is you're 190e carb or injection?

Mine is a fuel injected model, I know its running rich as the plugs which are only a month in place have sooty deposits. The tick-over is lumpy too. I suspect just leaning the mixture correctly would have the old lump running better (its just fine when on the move)
while improving the ecomony. Post the name and number here as someone else may be glad of the info... :)

Yeah, Xtreme Autos invested in a rolling road but didn't get an exhaust analyser... You're probably right about their interest in your Merc, but you never know.

Have you checked your O2 sensor, if you have one?

Its a non-cat (thank God!) so no O2 sensor. I have a hex key set so I could fiddle with the adjustment but I'd almost certainly be wasting my time. Unless its belching smoke you can't tweak it visualy.

I know UL has an exhaust gas analyser (I used it for my final year project), but they don't let non-UL people use it.

I believe Singland motors in Limerick have one, but they could be pricey. You could also try looking for a fuel-injection specialist, or an engine tuner - have a gander at the Golden Pages, you might get lucky.

Why are you happy about that Mike? Two environmental reasons I did take into consideration in buying my big barge ;) were

    1. It's second hand - not new. If I don't buy it, someone else will
    2. It's a cat (thank God!)
