    Hi folks,

My girlfriend and I have just moved to opposite ends of the country and we're trying to use irc to chat as often as possible.
The problem is: in Uni, port 6667 is blocked, so I can't connect to irc.

Does anybody konw of anyway around this at all?

    Cheers,
    Sinecure

http://http-tunnel.com the solution to all of your problems! configuring it is simple. select socks4/5 and give your username and pw for the for the college network. http://www.xchat.org and go to settings, select socks4/5 and set your proxy server to localhost: 1080. Done and Done.

You can get around it using standard IRC options.

    Go into options/firewall

Set the Firewall Support to Server, and the Server type to Proxy.
Enter your college proxy and port number in the boxes provided.

    Easy.

These options are only available in newer version of mIRC.

Thank guys, but I still can't get this working. I'm no network wizard, but I thought I'd be able to get it working.

Where exactly can I get my proxy server's ip address and port from?

    Thanks.

    Ok, a little progress.
I don't need to enter any username or password to get this far.

It seems to try to connect to irc anyway, but then returns the following error:

    "*** Looking up your hostname
    *** Checking Ident
*** Couldn't look up your hostname

    Auth Hacker

    Closing Link: <username> by oslo.no.quakenet.org (G-lined)"
    Disconnected (Remote host closed socket)."

I'm presuming it's the server disconnecting me since I'm connecting to it in an unusual way or something.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

that's ok, you're getting around the firewall fine. It's just that ign.ie.quakenet.org has glined http-tunnel users. So you can't irc there :(

Try connecting to Dalnet or Undernet instead.

Neither of those work either, by the way.
But it's ok - I've got the actual connection working now anyway, so it's just a matter of picking my server.

It was easier than I thought - it's just that the whole g-slide thing was with the server when i was thinking that it was my connection itself.

    Thanks a lot guys!

You could try using a bouncer to access quakenet, should work fine then.

I'm trying to set up the same thing in WIT. A friend of mine has supplied me with a bouncer so all I need now is the address of the proxy in WIT so I can use http-tunnel. I know that there are quite a few members in WIT so if anyone could provide the neccessary info, I'd be very grateful.

Or, if anyone has any better ideas...

    Dave
