Claiming back tax?

    How many years back can I claim for an overpayment of income tax? I think I have a considerable amount arrising from the 1997/1998 tax year. Can I go back that far?

    In theory it is 6/7 years (I reclaimed 5 years in one batch - and got 5 cheques). Any further and it gets iffy. They can get you for at least 12 years though.

    Might sound stupid, how did you know that you overpaid income tax ?:)
    The way tax is calculated is very compicated to alot of people !

    Have been doing some returns for the mrs and realised that I had been drawing the dole for about 6 months in 1997 and had forgot to claim back the excess.

    Bunged in a FOI request to both revenue and socal welfare for the figures and will work from there.
