Book on USSR history

    Can anyone recommend a book on the history of the USSR in the 20th century? This is for personal enjoyment and not academic reasons, so I'm looking for something colourful, simplified, non-partisan and preferably not enormous.

    Not really what you are looking for but... I gotta recommend "One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

    After you read the history book, read this one for a worms eye view on what life was like for the guys on the bottom rung on the social status ladder.
