    Hi,

The Irish Light Pollution Awareness Campaign will have its official launch at Whirlpool this weekend, at 11am on Sunday Morning. Many thanks to David Bell and the Shannonside Astronomy Club for giving us the oppertunity to speak at the Whirlpool Star Party.

For any of this campaign to be a success we need support. In particular we want to build up a network of regional members who would be willing to help out with submissions, giving talks, and talking to the local media.

Among the things ILPAC will bo doing are:
    * Giving public talks and lectures to interested groups about the effects of light pollution and the progress that is being made worldwide and in Ireland for better lighting.
    * Producing leaflets about light pollution.
    * Publishing sample letters and submissions for people who want to write to their coucils, TD's and local business asking them to consider better lighting designs, and how to object to bad lighting where necessary.
    * Putting the case for better lighting regulations to the Governemnt and Councils.

If you cant make it to our meeting then please join our mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ilpac/ . Our web page, where we will be publishing more information soon is at http://www.irishastronomy.org/ilpac

If you have any questions or comments please dont hesitate to contact us at ilpac AT irishastronomy.org.

    Regards,
    Albert White,
    Acting deputy Chairperson

ILPAC is supported by the Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies, An Taisce, Friends of the Irish Envirnment and the International Dark Sky Association

    Hi,

Many thanks to those of you who made it to the launch. There were about 100 people there, which isnt bad for 11am on a Sunday morning after an observing night in the grounds of Birr Castle! Special thanks must go to David Bell and Shannonside Astronomy Club again for letting have the event at the excellent Whirlpool Star Party and David Levy, who is on the board of the International Dark Sky association for his support and encouragement.

We recieved some great ideas during the very active meeting, and will be following up on those soon.

We are still looking for more help, so please sign up to the mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ilpac/ . We are especially interested in hearing from folks who would be willing to be regional coordinators, which involves heeping an eye on local planning and development issues, and promoting ILPAC by giving society talks & presentations etc. You can contact the committee directly at ilpac AT irishastronomy.org.

    Cheers,
    Albert White,
    Deputy Chair,
    Irish Light Pollution Awareness Campaign.
