I am sick to death of post 20th century Nirvana fans going around with teeshirts of kurt cobain with the "I hate myself and i want to die" Slogan. The mans death was a result of suicide. Slogans like that are disrespectful. we dont see people going around with teeshirt slogans with pictures of John lennon getting shot or Jimi hendrix choking on his own vommit.

God, I cannot ****ing stand that stupid T-Shirt.

As Denis Leary once said "You're 18 years old, you know **** about ****, and PULL UP YOUR PANTS!!!"

I know most of them wouldn't even be 15 yet, but the principle remains the same.

Yeah, they're annoying little pricks. I think its sometimes funny when one of them sees you with a Pantera or whatever t-shirt and they come up to you and act like your friend. The amount of times I've told them to Fuck off is nearly in triple figures I'd say.

They think that we (rockers) should all be thrown into a bowl away from other forms of music. That pisses me off.

I agree with ya totally. Most of these people dont have time for ya unless you`re dressed in black all the time. If you say that you`re interested in any form of music other than rock they look down their noses at you. its stupid. im proud to be a "rocker" i have lots of friends with different music tastes but im not condensending towards them.

Yeah... Its a picture of a serial killers bedroom with loads of newspaper articles about music driving people to kill themselves etc. cut out. There is a picture of Cobain from one of the articles and a poster of Slayer.

I remember that , I looked for it there but some bafoon (namely me) lost the inlay!

On another note I never really saw the amazing god like appeal of Nirvana. I had some of their albums but it was more a case of their good but ... *shrug*

yeah the whole 'cult' thing is a bit gay, but its nice to see nirvana's stuff (i mean more than just slts/nevermind) being heard by a whole new generation of kids
but its gonna get worse before it gets better - next yr is the 10th anniversary of his death, with a new comp. disc/box set (?) coming out.
as for the 'i hate myself and i want to die' shirts, its not disrespectful at all...its the name of a nirvana song (great one too) and the origional title for in utero. lil bit of cobain humour. haha.
i had something else to say, but ive forgotton it now...

The I Hate Myself and Want to Die print, despite the fact that it was the working title of In Utero, is still disrespectful in my opinion, because Cobain did hate himself and did want to die. He must have felt pretty damn awful about himself and his life to commit suicide despite having a young daughter and that shouldn't be paraded, it's not exactly the most pleasant or admiration-worthy thing. He was a poet, and I respect him, but his death does not deserve admiration. Pity, sympathy, not admiration.
As for the clones that you see wandering around town, I think it's peer pressure and plain ignorance. There seems to be an opinion that one must dress all in black, always wear Nirvana, Slipknot etc. t-shirts and hoodies and criticise all music not within the rock spectrum, or else one is a 'teenybopper'. It's ridiculous. I could have been one of those clones, but copped onto myself too early for any damage to have been done. I realised that what is seen by these people as 'individual' is in fact nothing of the sort. It's like the Lavigne-a-likes...Avril Lavigne is copied because some poor unfortunate souls see her as individual and want to be 'individual' too and therefore copy her style, her *bad* attitude etc.
One must keep open opinions about music, and never criticise anything before one has listened to it. Unfortunately, many of these teenagers do not keep open opinions. Let's hope they all cop on to themselves before they hit 20.

That's providing they don't follow Mr. Cobain's example by then

To think that out of all of the great songs and lyrics that Kurt Cobain wrote, "I hate myself and want to die" was the slogan chosen to print on crappy hoodies.

People cling to the strangest of things. While I dislike the idea of some 12 year old sk80rboi wearing such a thing, I don't see the point in even bothering to worry about it. They're young and they're without an identity. They'll cling to anything controversial.

I agree...I was once one of those kids. I revered in a lot of stuff that would upset, well...whomever. These kids are too young to realise that they maybe acting disrepectfully, I wreckon they think they ARE being respectful of Curt & at the same time throwing two fingers @ the world...they'll realise it for themselves eventually.

"when will you teens learn to be uncool like every one else"

yes I too hate those t-shirts...worn by people I call "mini Rockers"
it is disrespectful in my opinion.
I'd have to agree with freak on this....Kurt wrote some great lyrics. why did they pick that one.....:f33r:

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭gucci

maybe its more into the image they wanna cling on to than if they wrote "smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now!"
cant imagine too many mini rockers wearing that on their tee shirts-would be funny though!!

    "kissing girls,man thats so gay!"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,918 ✭✭✭Deadwing

Most of the Mini rockers who wear the "..want to die" hoodies/t-shirts would have been roughly about 5-10 years old when Nirvana were at their peak, so obviously they had no clue about the music then. So while anyone around my age (23) can laugh at them and think "Pffft..mini rockers..what do they know? They never even heard Nirvana while cobain was still alive!!", imsure most older people, who were our age in the 70's, would look at me wearing a Sid Vicious shirt and think "Pffft..little punk, he wasnt even born when Sid was around!!", im sure the same goes for Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison Et Al.
And while it is laughable that they think theyre being such "Individuals", (expressing their individuality through mass conformity in their chosen favourite band) at least theyre not going around in track suits taking E's, going "Deaaaadly buzz!!" and mugging people. When they reach about 19-20, they too will realise how dumb they were and laugh, and finally get a real sense of identity....whatever that is.

Jesus, you'd swear some of you people were intimidated by them.

They are kids, even young adults, and they are looking for something to belong to. A reason to hang around with other people and talk about stuff.

Consider if they didn't do that, then what would they do, others would give out to them for playing football cause they are "young and Weak" etc, Jesus, they are fitting into the stereotypes of generations before them.

They are like any of the kids who buy pop music and go to Robbie Williams/Brittany Spears gigs. Only they choose to listen to rock and so listen to what they consider to be great rock. Hell, they would even listen to zeppelin or Floyd if they thought that it was "cool" and would gain them attention.

So what if they were a certain stylised shirt. Big whoop, its not doing anyone any harm other than his or her parents/self’s who have to pay a crazy price for it.

Also in saying that its disrespect full, that’s utter cock. If you knew anything about Cobain he loved being controversial and to make some sort of news. He spat on his fans when they asked him for an autograph, which was the best autography they could ever get

as was said it was a bit of Cobain humour.

If he didn't want any of his lyrics printed on t-shirts then he wouldn't have become and entertainer.

God, one thing I hate is this new fad of hating nirvana/young nirvana fans. You’re as bad as each other. Judge not lest yee be judged.

It's unfortunate though, because anyone who is young and has a geniune interest in metal/rock just gets shunted into the "mini rocker" label.
