Has anyone ever netbooted windows (off a netapp etc.) - as in, booted a machine with no hard disk etc.

Also, can you script adding users ? I have someone that wants to add 50 odd accounts that would just have FTP access to specific folders. Adding them by hand would be a pain.

    Yes* and Yes#

*Windows 95 was the last netbootable version of windows.
Even later versions of it would not net boot without serious hacking. AFAIK the nearest you get is remote install from a 2K Active Directory server. Anyway no point 'cos 2k / XP will commit suicide if they think they have been cloned or copied to a different machine.

In contrast Cluster Knoppix will PXE boot happily...

#you can import csv's into an exchange server and get it to setup the accounts - there are utils on the Resource kit to do this too.. - doubtless there are other ways too... Eg: in 2k server you can Export user names.

    RE: Crazy stuff with windows
98 - a DHCP IP and three static IP's bound to one NIC AND IP routing to another NIC.
    95 running on a 40MB HDD
Win 311 on an XT with CGA screen.
Used to have a bootable floppy with W311 GUI / filemanager / tetris and a couple of other utils (and it had sound too)
