SEO, the holy grail of every webmaster. I do not specialise in SEO but there are some good Irish companies, which do. Saying that, I will attempt to answer your questions.

How relevant is the Open Directory?
Very Important, many search engines including Google use that databaseto complement their own.

Sites to visit to research this subject?
Because I do not provide SEO services I set-up a site which covers the basics of SEO which is worth a read. Have a look at http://ww2.ketec.ie

SEO is a highly complex process, although there are a LOT of amateurs playing about with it.

If you are serious about getting your company's site noticed you should hire a professional.
Automated submissions should generally be avoided with one or two notable exceptions.
    Manual submission is best
W3C compliant HTML is always a winner
The <TITLE> tag was created for a purpose.

http://www.2bscene.net offer a very good service which works.

hey happydays, I'm just getting started into a research project on analysing search engine placings and have been doing a lot of reading on the matter, won't be able to help you manipulate it yet, but what you mean by analysing cos i'm sure we'll be able to help each other there...

I have very little experience in this area but previously found that paying for Overture.com clicks helps listing with other non-pay search engines.
