ALL material is directly quoted from this Sundays Bus. Post

" David Mc Redmond is the commercial director of Eircom and the man who controls Eircom's broadband digital subscriber line (DSL) strategy."

AW- DSL take up so far has been pathetic. Would you agree?

DM- " If you compare the launch period of DSL in this country to that of other countries - and comreg has noted this informally - we are ahead of the growth curve"

" issues as to why DSL take-up was slow up to now are in the past. We are acting now, making it available and I think that people are going to look back in a couple of years time and see that Eircom delivered again what is delivered for internet use, which is to drive the highest levels of internet usage in Europe. You will see that Eircom will do the same for broadband. "

    ----((( ummmmmm yeaaaaaa rightttttt. )))

AW- Many people would say that the biggest factor has been that the cost of DSL has been too high. what is your response to that ?

DM- "We recently launched a major new DSL package. One of the options is a reduced rental fee of 35 euro ( plus vat ) instead of waiving the connection fee. but the truth is that comparisons are very difficult. When you take a blended rate of the differen't costs and you analyse it on a proper basis, you actually see that compared to other European countries , we are arguably below average with these promotions. We are certainly around the average for Europe."

" the average fixed line telecoms bill is lower than the average US or British bill. "

" I could say that , overall , we are one of the three or four cheapest countries in europe for telecoms"

    *mutters******mutters*

AW- Some of the more technically literate broadband users claim that the download cap of 4GB per month is poor. Do you think it's too small?

DM- I couldn't answer that, I'd have to refer it to a technical expert. BUT CERTAINLY WE HAVEN'T HAD ANY SIGNIFICANT LEVEL OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT.

    *mutters******mutters*

AW- One of the commonest criticisms about Eircom is that it has been less than wholehearted in seriously pushing DSL because of its existing ISDN business. What do you say to that ?

    DM- "it's not a factor"

it goes on .... and on along the same lines as before .

Mc Redmond even has the balls to dismiss a speach made in Rome by the minister for communications that clearly berated Eircom. The minister said that direct intervention was "legitimate" and "in the interest of citizens" and was planning collocation facilities to take away Eircom's control of phone exchanges

[edit]Threatening people isn't nice. Have a bit of cop on. Thanks. - ecksor[/edit]
