    i have film in avi and mpeg format, the file size is normally 710Mb.

    when i go to burn the cd the cd is over 850Mb,

    is there any way of compressing the avi or mpeg even more than divX already has??

    using standard cds???

    you could re-encode the divx into an other divx with lesser quality, for example if its encoded @ 900kbit/s, encode it at about 750 or so. theres an app that works out what rate you should encode it at. also, try gordian knott (http://blog.lotas-smartman.net/archives/000540.php) which does everything, literely. also, nero will burn the CD as a VCD. that could be handy. havent got it working myself, but it should work well.
