    Hello,

A friend tells me that BF 1942 is a great game, so i decided to purchase a copy. I have a few questions

Is there a popular version I should buy or anything like that ?

Do I need a very powerful computer to run it ?

can I play online over the internet with random people ( like AOE)
or do I have to join groups and go to LAN partys ?

Where can I buy a second hand copy ?

Any help you can give is much appriciated,

    Alan.

One of my Fave games of all time :)
Is there a popular version I should buy or anything like that ?

Buy the orignal copy at least, then download the patches for it, the newest is 1.45, there rather large so i hope you have a fast connection. If you like you could get the Expansions The Roat to Rome and Secret Wepons of WW2. I still think the orignal is the best,

There are also some free mods for the game which make it even better, Desert Combat is a full conversion that allows you to user modern wepons / tanks / Jets / Choppers etc..

There is also Forgotton Hope, Eve of Destruction and some others.
Do I need a very powerful computer to run it ?

Yes and No, it will run ok on a 1000mhz, i have not tried it on slower, you also need an OK graphics card. I played it on:

    P4 1.6
    1024 MB SDRAM
    GForce 4MX 64MB
in 1024x768 with most things up full and it was fine.
can I play online over the internet with random people ( like AOE)

Yes, Just join any internet server that you find. You can also run a lan server with bots.
Where can I buy a second hand copy ?

I would not do this, a valid CD key is required for Multiplayer online, and if you get a second hand copy, the orignal owner will have a copy of your cd key, and it may get blocked, and 2 people cant use the same key at the same time

To save from having to download, you can also get most patches and updates from games mags (best bet the DVD versions) of PCGAMER or PCZONE. The last pczone had the latest version of DC on it to (the latest that was out then...

ONline play is best if you can find a good server, with reasonable ping, no team kill and good numbers.

    I used to run the game on a pen3 500mhz, 256 ram, geforce3 32meg

it ran quite good but the graphics wern't the best, but definatly playable. My dad is using that pc now when playing b1942 and has no problems

yup, youlll need a damn fast connection for updating, or else you should go to one lan, or make friends witha player or something. The latest version of desert combat is 600megs alone!

loads of people are crap, no worries :P

LAN's take place in organised venues, u have to bring your own PC tho, usually. check www.room101.org, up coming ones are listed there, and you sign up for them as well.

how much did you pay for it? it should run battlefield, just not the best performance. I am a bit worried by that graphics card, the 7000, i hear they arent great.

also another 512 megs of DDR RAM wouldnt go amiss with battlefield.

well the system including the monitor was 640 inc Vat however due to a bit of a tax cheat and the fact im selling my old PC it is costing be about 200 euro..

I could probally buy some more memory next month...Ill test the
graphics card ..if its no good i guess I will look for a new one.

could you reccomend a card ?

If you're getting any copy make it this one...

"Below please find the current release schedule for EA. Please note that dates are subject to change..."

    "..28th November Battlefield 1942 Deluxe "

Id recommend a memory upgrade, highly. When i first played BF it was on a 64mb GF4 with 256mb ram, and it played well enough, but stuttered a bit, and you couldnt use many bots. With a memory upgrade to 512 it ran fine.

And then i bought a 128 Geforce FX and it handles it even easier :D
