I am offering people an alternative to middle aged politicians. That is all. A bit of energy and fresh ideas would not go astray I think.

As for who is the best candidate - I don't know who that person may be. We will have to wait and see eveyone who is running. In some people's opinion I could be the best candidate. Other people might think someone else is better.

I will answer the other questions soon. I have to do a little research to answer some of the questions properly. I can answer two right now. I was against the Nice treaty and I tried to persuade young people to vote NO as nobody else seemed to be doing it.

I am not affiliated to any party. I have opinions on them but none of them appeal to me right now. None of them have a vision that I would share.

I will answer the others in more detail later.

To answer your question, she was 21 in 1999 so she is 25/ 26 now. So I would be the youngest at the moment.

I'm not interested in an alternative. I have several alternatives already.
I'm interested in a better way of doing things.

That is a real issue, not just for students, but for parents also who have to pay it, maybe not just for one child, but possibly two or three.

I know of the bad state of public transport around the country. I know of how angry people feel after the scam Fianna Fáil did last year around the time of the election. The reason I want to be elected a MEP is to help people with "real political issues".

Real issues? Agreed. What have they to do with your hoped-for role as an MEP? Are you going to spend your time as an MEP dealing with local, non-EU issues like potholes and street lighting, or will you do the job you hope to be elected to do?

Seanán, you simply can't expect people to vote for you because you want to be the youngest sitting MEP and because you told them to. At least try to engage with other people on the topics here so they can see your political views.

Sinn Féin, Greens, Socialist Party - I assume you actually have heard of them!

    Why were you against it?
I am not affiliated to any party. I have opinions on them but none of them appeal to me right now. None of them have a vision that I would share.

How did you vote in the last General Election? Which party/candidate did you vote for and why? From a policy perspective, what makes you different to the parties I mentioned above? Would you consider yourself leftwing or rightwing? Which party in the EU Parliament Grouping would you be associated with if indeeed you did get elected?

What would YOU actually DO if you got elected?

And tell us, what is your 'vision'? Which Irish party would be feel closest to, and why?

the whole vote for youngest mep, I have loads of fresh ideas and then nameing none of your ideas or opions on anything got me pissed enough to post

but after reading everyone else post it seams that most basis are fairly well covered.

Please come back and let us know where you stand on the issues when you have decided where you stand on them?? One would have thought this would have been the first step you take before anoucing your campaign

Why should I vote for this chap just to make him the youngest MEP? A few actual views on something might be nice.

(hopefully for his own sanity he'll do better in the euro elections than in last years UL Students union presidential election)

He Threaten to sue me for calling him a muppet :)

he'd want to develop a harder skin if he wants to be a politician.

    Yes. Brutally.

It'll be more fun with them though as they'll have some policies to criticise.

Don't get me wrong - I wish you well. And I don't want to get belted with a baseball bat when I wander out of the CSIS building in UL in twenty minutes:D. Without policies you're about as useful as Cork though. Or a cat flap in an elephant house. Get policies (make them up!) and come back.

Some people were wondering about the youngest MEP ever elected. I looked her up in the EP website. He name is Ilka Schroder. (I don't she is related to Gerhard Schroder.)

She was born on the 22, January, 1978. She is a member of the German Green Party and was elected in 1999 at the age of 21, which makes her 25 now.

Her details are available at www.ilka.org or at www.europarl.eu.int.

It'd fall into the "expressing a personal opinion" category and hence the libel action would go nowhere.

Example of a non-actionable statement (opinion):
Charlie McCreevy is a useless minister for Finance and has no understanding of economics

    A very actionable example:
Charlie McCreevy has sexual relations with sheep every weekend and indeed, did the dirty deed with a wee lamb last Friday night outside the Pod.

So Seanan threatening legal action over being called a muppet reveals a less than perfect example of the libel laws (which isn't exactly unique amongst wannabe or current politicians anyway). The context and usual use of the word would have to be taken into account (as iin Reynold's case over being called a gombeen man). Calling someone a muppet would be non-actionable in any case, given the usual usage of the word to mean a fool.

What an utterly pathetic approach to an election campaign.

I for one will be making copies of this thread available to my fellow residents in Leinster (Ireland East) about the attitude of some candidates to getting elected.
