Hi! Im in a bit of a tizzi. I have forgotten my admin password for xp. I set a password in safemode as well as the normal login and cannot remember either. I have my father set up with a limited account user and I have no way of accessing my files.
I dont want to reinstall as I will loose all of my programs and files.
I have done some research on the net for programs but they are overly priced (ie locksmith).

    Can somebody help please!!!

well for one thing you shouldn't of forgotten your password but the reason why you can get a program to fix it is that there is a market for it cos loads of people forget passwords and they wouldn't give the software away for free now would they???

Thank's for that longword. Will it work on FAT32 partitions. It states that it will work on NTFS partitions??

It should do, though I've not tried it on anything other than XP and Win2K on NTFS. I'd say it mentions NTFS specifically because Linux support for NTFS has always been a bit patchy because the format is about as well documented as .doc.

Tried that but to no avail. It is looking for the partition that supports NT and when I sellect the C it replies "not located on C:.

    Any other suggestions??

I seem to remember reading that it does support FAT32, won't swear to that.

When you were telling it which partition your XP was installed on, did you give it in the linux format?

I imagine that in your case you would enter your partition as being:

    /dev/hda1

where hd means you are using IDE (probably) [rather than SCSI which is sd]

if you got xp installed on a fat32 drive, all you have to do is boot from a floppy and delete the sam file,

    winnt\system32\config\SAM

now you have no admin password, just press enter

Thanks for that guy's. I will give that a go now and I will let you know what happens.

    Thanks

Ok. I got as far as determining the path to the sam file. I did a search on the computer to make sure that it was winnt/system32/config/sam. When I typed that in on request it just went to another line asking for the path to the sam file.

    Very frustrating...

    HELP!!!:(

Theres a file going around the Binaries newsgroups called "WINTERNALS.ADMINISTRATOR.PACK" lots of utilties and stuff, has a file called LOCKSMITH which allows you to change any and all Passwords on a XP or 2000 system.

greystreeks, Do you mean you tried entering

    winnt/system32/config/sam

for the path to the SAM file as part of the linux bootdisk
    process?

    The path is just

    winnt/system32/config

as the program looks to see if other files are there as
    well as the SAM file.
Assuming this goes ok, you should be given the chance
    to change the admin password.

Sorry it took so long to reply guys.....

Soiaf, I typed winnt/system32/config as the path and it will not accept it.

it states "what is the path to the SAM file [winnt/system32/config/sam]"

Tried that and it repeats the command again....what is the path to the SAM file [winnt/system32/config/sam]"

    Strange:(

Did you try just pressing RETURN at the prompt?

Do you have more than one partition or disk by any chance?
It that was the case the disk you are mounting at the
earlier stage may not be the right one (unlikely, but possible).

Otherwise (and assuming you are running FAT32) you might
be better looking at the method suggested by tlachta

If you don't have a bootdisk, you can get one at
    www.bootdisk.com

and then remove the SAM file. You should then just be
able to log in with a blank password.

if you boot up in safe mode (f6 or f8 at bios screen to select) it should autologin, and from there u can change any local passwords u want.
