My project partner needs one for his laptop to hook up a a board.

ANyone know of any cheap ones?
Saw some on komplette, but they're €26-27.
It wouldn't seem to be too hard to make one up, I assume there's a rate converter involved somewhere to drop the USB rate down to something more manageable (9600baud :))

It's a good deal more complex than you think. The converter has to be pretty smart. USB is a packet-based protocol with a good deal of fluffy overhead that you have to get right, you have to negotiate for power, and behave well with all the other devices on the bus.

Sub 30 euro seems very reasonable to me.
