Getting priority on a Network.

    Hello
I am staying in a student residence campus thingie, where we have a few DSL lines linking the LAN to the net. Now some 'wiseguys' have taken to downloading full movies off the net, and most users can't even check their mail, view Porn, regular internet stuff. The kind staff in the office don't even want to know.
Short of visiting the house's where this chronic stealing of the bandwidth is taking place, and inserting their mouse where the sun don't shine, is their any piece of software that can prioritise the access, eg instead of them getting 350kbs a second downloads, each user would get an equal share? Or could I tweak some settings to move me up the pecking order. If software exists is it installed on the client side or on the server/router/gateway?

    Thanks.

Not sure - try looking up QOS / throttling

You could also setup a transparent caching proxy - eg: squid and then use squidguard to block off as much junk as possible.

Also since you are in the position of an ISP you should (probably a legal requirement) keep records of IP source and destination addresses and times (not personal details though) - once the word leaks out that sites vistied could be traced back it might encourage discretion.

The other trick of blocking ports for P2P apps is not as effective as it used to be.

You now have to try to use stateful inspection of port 80 packets to separate ordinary decent pr0n site browsing from kazaa stuff which is what hammers the bandwidth .

Good firewall or router needed , a soft firewall on a linux box running squid cache could do it I think. Squid can only cache or reject according to MIME type / port number and destination site.

If you run a kazaa supernode in there then you are definately in the sh1t.

you definitely need to block a few of the obvious..

p2p traffic (kazza ,imesh etc) block their standard server IPs

and proxy so u can do some level of content filtering.

if you give users full access, they milk it

Short of making a James Bond entrance during the night, I do not have access to the server/gateway. I intend to complain again about the state of the access next week, but I (and most) others do not want the p2p's being blocked either. We just want the movie downloaders to cease, and stop running as supernodes, running FTP's etc.
So there is no app I can run on my PC to give me priority, and any bit of a connection what so ever. Would distance from the server have anything to do with connections speed. Cause I am in one of the houses far away from the gateway.
    Cheers again.

If you do know who it is, fake a 'cease and desist' from some movie company threatening to sue their asses for copyright infringement

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,143 ✭✭✭spongebob

send the fake cease order to the Director of The IT and tell him to cease as well ... for de crack like :D

Set up a small linux box and a packet sniffer. Every time he's downloading, find out his IP, then change the IP of the linux box to match. Hey presto, IP replication error, and he has to reboot (unless he's a comp sci student).

There has to be a small script that could run on the linux box and continually update its IP to match his ;)

i myself are from glasan and im the person doing all the downloading
    HAHAHAH
    no just kidding
i cant even access a web site
i cud for one minute. and then it wud stop working
and i think its all becos of kazaa
Because of the transparent proxy running there whoever is raping kazaa can only use port 80 supernodes. There is not many of them so if we make a list of them and hand them into the reception then maybe they cud pass it on to the administrator and they cud block the ip's. Then kazaa wudnt work.
Then the internet wud be unreal fast.
oh yeah nearly forgot to say
the same thing happened last year but ppl stopped using kazaa and then it was grand.

the computer netowrk in glasan is a mess and they cant even produce a right guide on how to connect to the network

I have seen the problems with various laptops coming in having been trying to connect to that network.

    Nice one Seamus
but why stop there - set the MAC addres to be the same as the offenders (ifconfig) ;) - so when he reboots he still don't get an new IP.
Then send the Cease & Desist message to the IT staff , and let them trace it back..

Note: if they are using managed switches they would be able to tell which port the offending message came from :(

no really im not. I dont use kazaa BECOS its making the net so slow.
but em it wud want to be sorted out. SO how many of ye are in glasan.
They shud set up a proper proxy in my opinion.

The Chief Child Protection officer in the Health Board has recenty heard a rumour about Child Porn DVD rings in Glasán or the GIT itself and is not a happy camper so I am sure the IT staff may be helping his enquiries already.

Do any of the offenders have a DVD burner in their rooms. ?

**** if there is kiddie p0rn being downloaded that is a police matter. Is that fact or a rumour? The GMIT network itself is being hammered these days by Kazza users, was on 4 PC's in one lab, and each of them had a copy of Finding Nemo in the shared folder. Along with loads of other movies. One guy I know in college is the zen master when it comes to Kazaa, its almost a mini industry.
But personally I wouldn't be for the stopping of Kazza in Glasan, I do use it to find music. If nobody else is even able to connect to yahoo etc, they must be downloading from high speed sites, not something with variable speeds like Kazaa. Even though a supernode running in here would create the problems that are plauging most of us.

There is a live complaint about the IT or some of the students there, thats all I know. I assume the IT people would know first and are logging the necessary evidence as part of the investigation. A sneaky network admin would gradually group all the suspects into a single VLAN , put a box into promiscous mode, and mirror the transferred files onto a harddrive , <ahem>.

A really sneaky admin would force certain users to change their passwords more often, purely as a matter of good operational practice you understand.

im getting so sick of this problem here in Glasan.
it took me like 30 mins to get onto boards.ie and the net will prob stop working for me again in a min
    damn kazaa users

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 598 ✭✭✭IronMan

There is a firewall going in soon, and that will end the problems. Kazaa will be but a memory. Unless ........ahem, no I'll keep that work around for myself! But its a shame that we all get punished because a few nerdingers hog all the bandwidth. Running a supernode on port 80 is just stupid. Add in a few trojans, virii, and other pieces of software evil, and the whole thing ground to a halt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Tiesto

yeah i went into them about it yesterday. There shud be a guy coming down from dublin soon to sort it out.
Im in college now typing this. Cant even log onto a web site in glasan atm.

There seems to be a good few ppl from Glasan on boards??
we shud setup an irc channel.

Would be nice if someone set up an FTP or some other service to share everything we have of value on our drives. Would save people from using up the bandwidth for a program/video that someone already had. Like last year I downloaded a Photoshop Trial, a 180MB download, and someone else had it when I went looking afterwards!. Its good someone is going to sort it out, I have my suspicions as to who is using most of the bandwidth up, some software off astalavista and a pissed off attitude to the situation has lead me to make a few deductions watson.

what is ur computer name on the network iron?
    mine is STOPusingKazaa.
yeah i know of some ppl who are using it aswell.
Came across a good few ppl with kazaa on there computer on the network.
i had a ftp up last year on the network.
I got a lot of files to share, but not gonna share them until the bandwidth hogging stops.
by the way,how are u accessing boards today? in college or in glasan, cos i cant access it in glasan cos of the bandwidth hoggers.infact i cant access any site

My computer name is stophoggingthebandwidth on mshome. I have some problems viewing other groups eg workgroup and celtic. I'd run a FTP if I had enough hard drive space but I don't. Might be getting a new box next month which will have a fuk off hard drive in it so I might set something up then. Kazza Lite itself wouldn't be a problem if it was used sensibly and they just clicked 'Do not act as a supernode', if they ran a virus scanner over their files, and got rid of the worms and trojans we might be sorted. And no I'm not writing this from Glasan, can't even get my home page to appear.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 91,785 Mod ✭✭✭✭Capt'n Midnight

    Dumb question -
does Kazza have an option to limit bandwidth ?
    (most download managers have...)

Then have an AUP that either bans P2P or sets acceptible bandwidth usages..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Tiesto

no its not the "do not act as supernode" thats the problem.
There is only a 2 megabit line coming into GLasan, for all those people.
one person can max that out in kazaa. People are leaving kazaa on allllllll day getting movies. I got the new badboys movie of the network.
one guess where they guy got it from => Kazaa!!
Didnt stop me from getting it off him tho :)
Im gonna set up an ftp when the internet gets sorted.yeah i got the problem viewing some network groups aswell.
I think the best thing would be to block out kazaa altogether. But it is so handy for getting music :):(

Oh yeah, they completely shut down the net in glasan yesterday evening from what i heard. Not to sure why.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 598 ✭✭✭IronMan

They are installing a firewall afaik, so that will end the Kazaa debate! Tiesto do you have the names of some of them groups? I have
    1)MShome,
    2)workgroup,
    3)some german sounding one,
4)Office (one user with his whole drive shared, I particularly liked his collection of LOTR erotic fiction),
    5)Celtic

I'm sure there is more groups and users, just isn't registering properly. So if you have any more groups will you fire them no so i can register them manually.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Tiesto

thats about all the groups i have seen. 1 or 2 more but u cud never connect to them.
yeah they installed a proxy there today anyways.
do you know when we get our login and password for it?
I have changed my computer name to Tiesto now, Dont think there is any need for the StopUsingKazaa one anymore :)
    did u change urs or??
    are u sharing anything?
i might setup a few shares tonite or when i get online.
Thank god they finally got it sorted out.
they opened up all the ports that have been closed before aswell.
    nice one.
And bandwidth will be distributed between users online aswell i think.
