    id consider amon amarth death.:horned:

Dissection would go under the "black /death metal "category i
guess, but its kicks arse so hard that i had to throw it in somewhere

I'd say Amon Amarth more along the 'Viking Metal' lines, which is a sub-genre of black metal. But the opinion is generaly divided on that really, met quite a few people who call them Death Metal...

But Dissection Death Metal? I think only the name is remotely Death-like, I'd say they're pure Black through and through. Although, they certainly DO kick ass, definetly a brilliant band.

    Opeth - Orchid
    Opeth - Still Life
    Obituary - World Demise
    Entombed - Clandestine
    Morbid Angel - Covenant

    At the moment, that's me..
I don't really feel that comfortable classing opeth as death metal though..

Neither do I, but they're far, far too good not to mention.

Well there's a few bands there that wouldn't really be pure death metal, At The Gates, Carcass, Opeth, Dissection, and maybe even Obituary.

Carcass and At the Gates are melodic death metal if anything. Opeth can't really be segragated into a genre, Dissection are black metal and Obituary are thrash/death metal.

Almost everyone I know classifies Carcass as Grindcore. Including me.

    Tbh.

OK then, Death Metal, incorporating grindcore, black metal, etc etc etc :D

    1. Opeth - Blackwater Park
    2. Arch Enemy - Anthems Of Rebellion
    3. Death - Spiritual Healing
    4. Carcass - Heartwork
    5. Sabbat - Dreamweaver

I guess the above isnt pure death metal, its melodic death metal but I like a bit more than a 45 minute growlaton these days, im getting old now:)

Carcass - Heartwork ...i say bollix...that album was the start of their decline.......Necroticism is by far and beyond way better than heartwork and indeed above and beyond any Death metal album ever. Groundbreaking stuff there my friends. Open your minds and your ears for that matter....obviously u were late comers on the scene.......its probably one of the few metal albums i listen to(getttin on a bit)....u missed the good old days in the 80's early nineties when tmetal was takin off. up your ass:p

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Well if you want to talk about ground breaking albums you'd have to talk about the likes of Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" and "Butchered At Birth" by Cannibal Corpse. It still does not say that they are the best albums out there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Latecomer? I'm old enough to remember when Napalm Death released Scum and Carcass wasn't even a glint in Bill Steer's eye :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 O2Suck

I'll give u alters of madness......but Butchered at birth nio....average.......nothing comes near Necroticism

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

Who the hell cares?:D As long as they keep makin metal that's all that counts to me!
There are so many bad bands out there that think classification matters so they come up with things like:

Extreme Grim Pagan Atmospheric Thrash Death Grind .....

    sometimes it gets hilarious...

    I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.
I sleep all night. I work all day.

I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
    I go to the lavatory.
    On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.

I cut down trees. I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
    I put on women's clothing
    And hang around in bars.

I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
    Suspendies, and a bra.
    I wish I'd been a girlie,
    Just like my dear Mama

OMG AW, u are so so so lame
There is no word in the english language that would aptly describe ur lameness.
May u never again grow ur hair long again and all your Opeth t-shirts turn pink in the wash.

what about Whoracle by In Flames?

Ive ony really gotten into Death, prefer a bit of melody tbh. I really like In Flames, Celtic Frost are ok.

Heard bits and pieces of other bands like Children Of Bodom, Cathedral, Dimmu Borgir and i like them i do!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

Not one mention of Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Trimphant yet. That's the best death metal album there is IMO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 767 ✭✭✭nesthead

since im not really into death so much.... ill go with a melodic death top 5!!

    1. Death - Individual Thought Patterns
    2. Children Of Bodom - Hatebreeder
    3. In Flames - Colony
    4. Arch Enemy - Wages Of Sin
    5. In Flames - Whoracle

Death may not be as "melodic" as the others, but that album surely is!!

thats only from my puny album collection, im sure there are better from the the likes of Scentenced, Nevermore, At The Gates, Carcass (god i really need some money for albums :/)

Opeth can't really be segragated into a genre.
    Progressive death metal :)

Id probably go for something along the lines of:
    1) In Flames - Lunar Strain and Subterranean
    2) Dark Tranquility - The Gallary
    3) Opeth - Black water Park
    4) Morbid Angel - Domination
    5) Dark Tranquility - The Minds I

Pretty much all bands there are sub genre's of death metal, except for Morbid Angel, but their the best Ive heard :)
