its a prize that the music industry people give to congratulate each other on their better-than-thou music taste and give the lucky winner $5000. this year there was some controversy regarding the event by bright eyes' (didnt get a chance to get his new album, although judging from the songs in Letting off the happiness, im surprised the guy didnt off himself) conor oberst protesting about the clear channel entertainment (one of the sponsors and owners of the venue where the awards were held) "There will be no more real music anymore if we keep letting people shove it down our ****ing throats." following the audiences approval and some guy's spitting on his shoes. crazy stuff

other nominees included the streets, interpol, yeah yeah yeahs, sigur ros, cody chessnut and some other obscure bands who managed to sell less than 500,000 albums. in the past i had high hopes for these awards seeing as they dont **** with commercial success stars and pluck these diamonds out of the hole in the music industry's pants. guess everyone needs a little money to start it off, although damian rice seems to be set having been touring america like a bastard recently. $$$

    bring on 2004!!

I wouldn't categorise any of the bands named above as being 'obscure'. You read a good bit about all of them in the press and their songs may not be on daytime radio but they're certainly fairly well known on this side of the Atlantic at least.
