tidal streets and bus lanes

    tidal streets have been suggested in the past as one solution to Dublin's traffic problems (ie a street where both lanes run into town in the morning and both run out of town in the evening)

    As they are about to put a QBC on the rock road this might be a good time and place to try out the idea.

    the rock road has 4 lanes all the way into ballsbridge - you could have 2 car lanes plus a bus lane into town in the morning, with just one lane out of town and then reverse the order in the evening. So basically the 2 outside lanes would be bus lanes, with cars permitted to use the outbound lane in the morning and the inbound lane in the evening, while the 2 inside lanes would be tidal.

    you would need to put up very good (probably overhead electronic) signage to make sure motorists were aware of the system but otherwise it would be an effective and relatively cheap way of maximising the use of the road (which is currently very congested and will be a nightmare once the QBC is in place)

    anyone have any thoughts on this?

    A similar sytem is used on the Golden Gate Bridge (main north bound exit for SF) using traffic cones and on the main bridge in Bordeaux (part of ring road but most of the city is on one side of river) using traffic light every few hundred metres. However, both are 7-9 lanes wide, which allows a spare lane in the middle to reduce accidents.

    In practice, I'm not sure if it would work on the Rock Road (this being Ireland). However having central bus lane might work it's very dependant on having a fifth lane for bus stops. They are experimenting with this on the Northern Fringe area Between the Malahide Road and the railway.
