Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

PHPBB V's vBulletin

I wish to provide a bulletin board for a portal site and intend to utilise either phpbb or vBulletin. I can live with paying for vB if it will provide a better offering to my browsers or is easier to run.

Would there be any additional costs associated with vB once I have it installed?

Is there any reason why I would need to purchase more than one vB licence for a single domain name?

From comparing BBS's I find phpbb a little clumsier. However, I'm not sure if that's just because I am used to using Boards.ie. Any opinions as to the benefits of one over the other would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Henri

VB is a commercial product based on OS technology.
When you pay for the license you get a product which is backed by a dedicated team of developers as well as an ever-growing userbase.
There are two types of license available:
    -Owned
    -Leased

With the owned license you 'own' your copy of the software and get 12 months access to the members' area for updates etc

With the leased license you have access for the duration of your contract.

If you wish to renew your access rights you would need to renew that part.

With regards to the licenses per domain - you only need one per domain.

With regards to ease of use, features etc., you need to look at what you need.
VB is designed to support thousands of users and has many powerful features which can be complemented via code additions etc. PhpBB is probably not as scalable, but might serve as a good starting point.
You can easily port your users etc. from PHPbb2 to VB

Apart from phpBB being free it's also supported by an ever growing userbase and ddicated team of developers.

In fact IMHO phpBB's support forum is excellent so far without fail when i've had a problem and posted it on their forums they've fixed it within 5 - 10 minutes

phpBB can support 1000,s of users too and again IMHO phpBB is just as good as vBulletin as theres loadsa mods you can install as well as modify it yourself

PHPBB is just as scalable and can also handle 1000s of users etc, etc...

between the two - when you get into the scale of having to support 1000s+ of users keeping the site running smoothly (as possible) is more down to config/admin of the the web and database services of the machine(s) used rather than which of those two BBs you use...

From a use point of view I love that in phpbb when you post a message you have the choice to:

    Go to your message or
Go to the forum you posted in.

In vb you must read your own message before getting out of the thread - how annoying.

I use phpbb on snip and it works great.
