Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can anyone help ive read the sticky above but i cant see anything on ADSL modems/routers/switches and firewalls for larger networks i.e 10/16 computers. Also the problem is i remeber reading some people had problems connecting more than one machine on a lan network to the same external game server because the IP address were the same or something.

Do i need to connect all 10/16 computers directly to the modem or can i have a server that connects to a hub then to the other machines on one side and the modem/router and on to the net on the other. If i can do the latter would a server be able to get arround the IP address isue ?.

Heheh sorry alot of questions but any recomendations on modems for this purpose.

    Cheers

PS.The SMC Networks 'Barricade' 2 Port Router and the D Link DSL 504 looked pretty good if they will work with larger networks.

Yeah, best bet is to get yourself an ADSL router and a hub.
Give each machine an internal IP, either static or DHCP.
And set the Router up as your gateway.

DSL routers are getting pretty cheap. You should be able to pick one up that does internal DHCP, NAT, Firewall, and has a built-in DSL modem, for less than €150.

As for gaming, well nothing you can do about that except pay for a more expensive package that gives you more IP addresses. Or convince everyone to use a server that doesn't require unique IPs.

There are also wireless DSL routers which can support more than 200 machines, eliminating the need for the hub. Why? Because wireless == no Ethernet ports, so you don't need a gigantic box to house all the connections. :)

If you have 16 machines that you want to connect to the DSL then you will need something like a 16 port switch and then connect this to a DSL router. It should work fine.

The only problem you might have is that RADSL isn't great when lots of people are using it at the same time. A 1m/256k ADSL service might be necessary, depending on how many people use it at the same time.

Also don't forget about the caps. Who pays what if you go over the cap.

Most games should play fine through a firewall (NAT). The only game I had problems with playing with multiple users coming through the same IP was Wolfenstein - but AFAIK that was due to the punkbuster software not being able to recognise multiple nat'ed users. This may have been fixed now.

Some handy pointers there.I have to admit im not keen on wireless unless its alot easier than it used to be :).As for connections i was going to use Esat bt,s business 1mb/256 until SDSL comes out (fingers crossed)BTW Esat sent me some FAQ,s in which they state they cant offer SDSL atm but are working hard on getting it released :).

PS. Sorry for the late reply ive been away for a couple of days.

    Thx
