    [RANT]
How many security notes on this page http://eu.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/current.asp
    fit into this category
Flaw / Buffer Overrun / unchecked buffer / Vunerability in XYZ
    allows code execution /privelage elevation
    ?

And then you have the holes in Real Player / Flash etc..

Point is - common sense will not protect you from ANY of these if you connect to the IntarWeb
    [/RANT]

    RE: Attachments
Back in the days of DOS you only had to worry about .COM .EXE and .BAT files and in Windows 3.11 for the most part only .PIF .REG and .SCR as well - now windows opens so many files it is almost impossible to keep track of those that should be blocked because they could potentially have Active content - especially when you take into account IE and other apps that integrate into the OS.
eg: RTF files used not contain Macros - now they can ...

Ie. most common sense assumptions as to what can and can't have active content you can ignore because there are too many hooks besides getting a user to click on something...

Exactly, "common sense" would be not using windows at all.

why not just sell your pc and be done with it ?

does your 65yr old granny have common sense ?

alot more than any of us on this board i would assume...

how will she take to a Linux/Unix install......

    sigh

ignoring security isn't going to make it go away...

Buy her a router - ADSL / ISDN / Serial / Modem whatever..
Make sure it hands out DHCP addresses - add a NIC to the PC.
Setup it's firewall, to block whatever.

Tell here to switch off the firewall when not using it in case it dials out.
Pop a Knoppix CD into the Drive. ;)
