    I don't agree.

If the AMD Athlon processor dosen't sell AMD are bollocked. So what intel has done is gave the consumer a bit more of an incentive to to by intel by cutting its prices by up to 50% in some cases.

Which would you go for a 500 p3 for
$250 or an Athlon 600Mhz for $500, When most of the p3 500mhz can be clocked up to almost 600Mhz anyway.

I don't know, which would you go for? Think long and hard smile.gif

The reasion that Intel are lowering prices is that they have just launched the p3 600 chip and want there older stock to clear out.

nope, the p3-600 is the same chip as a p3-450

why would they want to 'clear out' their stocks?

besides, the p3-600 isnt a very stable chip..
only if intel were being really pushed would they release a chip like this.. normally intel chips are very overclockable, but the p3-600 barely runs at 600 stable.

Yes, but AMD are expected to make price cuts on the Athlon as well, and it is by far the better chip.

AMD can't afford to lower there prices too much. They need to make a killing with this chiop or the **** will hit the fan.

Jedi you make a sound point as regards the sale of chips to the general user. However, the fastest x86 chip available today is the AMD Athlon.
Therefore all high-end and performance applications will use Athlons, if the hardware is there. AMD's medium-term future as technology leader is secure since the Athlon chip architecture is scalable to higher clock speeds.
The most likely route for AMD is to deliver a high-quality product concentrating on niche power-users and a tightening of belts to ensure that they can ride out Intels flooding of the market with cheap, lower quality product.

    A good point,

AMD's chips will definatly sell, no matter how many cheaper alternatives are on the market, simply because they are the best money can buy. How much money won't matter to the people out there who want 'the best'.

And I think we all know, there's plenty of those people around.
