yeah I've tried the free software but it eventually crashes and needs to be closed by windows although a re-install may fix that. It's slow starting up too, have not had the same problem with any other software which all start up instantly.

Dont know Magix. I've use iMovie, Adobe Premier, Apple Final Cut Pro X and Sony Vegas with GoPro footage. Adobe Premier Elements is a good cheaper option depending on what you looking to do. I've used the free Cinieform a bit, you obviously have yo use it to update the camer and other gopro bits its a very good free software, there are pro versions as well.

You want something that can use 60fps for smooth slow mo and not just bin the extra frames but you can use cinieform to do that then bring the slow mo footage into another editor.

resolved crashing issue by running as admin, will see how I get on with cineform for starters.

I find Corel Video Studio Pro X4 excellent, reliable, versatile and very easy to use (picked up the Ultimate version for less than the standard version in a special offer on Amazon).

Prior to that I had the X3 version which was also excellent but caused a lot of problems after I installed a subsequent service pack which I had to remove and then reinstall the original version.

I see there is a new X5 version out but haven't gone for it as of yet.

I've edited with FCP 10, Avid, Adobe and Sony Vegas. And to this day I prefer Vegas over all of them. I have to use FCP for work and it does the job but for my own personal editing I always revert back to Vegas. It allows the user to do more and doesn't inhibit you from moving clips. FCP is more like Vegas now in some regards.

After effects obviously is excellent for animating etc

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for video editing software that is easy to use and cheap and need recommendations.

I have videos of classroom environments and need the software to do basic functions such as trim and split video and add in very basic effects such as fade out, pan in etc, add and overlap audio and to turn the videos into wmv files.

I'm a relative novice at video editing but I have been using Windows Movie Maker but I find the output quality quite poor and demos on screen are blurry and difficult to view.

Have also been using a free version of AVS video editor to try it out and find it easy to use, the output quality is decent and the price is just $59 until the end of the month.

Would anyone recommend buying it or is there other software at a comparative price you would suggest i buy instead?

Hi, I bought Magix Movie Edit Pro lately it's not too bad and should be able to do what you want it for. I got a nice effects program with it for free but don't know if they are still offering it. Just Google Magix Movie Edit Pro.
It's currently €49.99.

Well you've 1 post... but I'm still going try to help out & say NO! Vegas if you're PC, Final Cut if you're Mac & Avid if you're both too but if you've come on here to say Magix is the best maybe you should use the forum & talk about why it is best ? (seriously defo not magix. I swear!!!)

Look forward to you're future contributions (I'm quite sure there wont be many...)

Recently Upgraded to final cut x 10.0.07 or whatever version it is.

Inital thoughts

1. Easy To Use.
2. Harder to find things without menus until i got used to it
3. the color corrector i'm not to sold on
4. The rest of it i really like don't see why everyones always having a go about it

His reply was in relation to my post. Don't think the post was referring to all software just a cheap one. If you have any recommendations too i'd be delighted to hear them :-)

I haven't used it yet but presumably they've fixed a lot of the mistake that was in the initial Final Cut X release in the slightly later version you have.

Just Got Premiere Pro have to work my way through the tutorials but seems to be pretty powerful

p Pro works really well inconjunction with other adobe products like speed grade and stuff! I still rather FCP and have most of it built in

Just hoping to get clarify on something, I have a feeling I'm missing something glaring. I used to use OpenShot on my Linux machine, but I'm fully using Windows now.

I installed Movie Maker, and I cannot see if/how to create levels, to insert either audio/video/photo?

In openshot I could create these and turn on/off audio/video for each one. So far in Movie Make I can only seem to create one level, then include audio from an mp3 file or the like.

In my case, I have two videos, I want audio from one and video from the other, but cannot do this in Movie Maker. Am I missing something?

I want a NLE PC built to my own specifications. This will be my 4th such system since 1993 but I am just a very keen hobbyist who has been interested in the moving image since I was a kid and I was also a member of several video clubs in the UK. My previous systems suffered from the usual microchip problems of 'planned obselecence' so I had to replace them. I can get a system from DVC in the south of England (perhaps Lump knows of them) but as I now live in Ireland I'd prefer to keep the work here, if at all possible. However I've been unable to find a company that specialises in such hi-spec systems although some are willing to built me a system of their choosing with their preferred hardware, which is not what I want. Can anyone help?
BTW this is a great forum. We can all learn from each other ... well done Boards.ie and all you contributors.

After having the thing month, I still don't know how to add a title as text into the movie. This is easy to do editing a movie in Youtube. Also quite easy to do in Corel's own Video Studio (Pinnacle is now owned by Corel)
Also, I notice that this thread, Editing Programs is just gone 10 years old!

Hi, I am looking for some suggestions for a software program for a mac to create a slideshow and edit video clips from my travels. Something free or relatively cheap is what I'm looking for.

Lightworks is a fully featured editor, but isn't that easy to get into - steep learning curve!

Don't know of any other worthwhile free ones for Mac.

Would anyone want to give an idea of video editing software that would be popular with professionals? Many of the editing suites in this thread would be names I'm familiar with, but maybe professionals would use different ones?

The project would be to compile a commemorative DVD from footage of a large sports tournament. I've been tasked with researching a number of different packages and reporting back, this is only initial research by myself, getting ideas for spec and cost.

Free trials available for all. The last two are free on Windows and Mac respectively. Those programs would be used for the editing of the footage. To author a DVD you would need separate software of which there's a large selection, some will have basic settings for menus and others will be very powerful and allow you to have a lot of control over how the DVD menus look and so on.

It's been years since I have had to burn a DVD so I'm not really up to date with that but the above editing programs would be 99% of what you would commonly see in use, unless I'm missing something obvious.

Premiere all the way for me really. After trying a couple I feel most comfortable in that.
Of course all the other programs will in some way do the same for you. Just a questions where you feel most at home.
But as frozenfrozen pointed out try them all !

I've been using Windows Movie Maker 2012 and have been happy with it thus far. I enjoy the simplicity of drag/drop, cut/trim layout but would appreciate more control over colour levels and other production tools.

In the hope of turning out a crisper and cleaner HD end product, I'm now looking at investing in a better camera and naturally enough, better editing software to match.

With the above considered, what's the best program for me? Happy to spend up to €100ish. Cheers!

I've been using Adobe Premiere Elements (not the expensive Pro version) for the past few years and find it to be excellent for my needs. A massive step up from Movie Maker in every way but a fairly easy learning curve and plenty of additional help on the Web and on youtube. Highly recommended.

Version 12 is enough for me but I think they're up to 14 now and includes 4K.

I own Adobe Premiere Elements 14 myself, but still use Windows Movie Maker 2012.

I also shamelessly use no less than Windows 10 "Camera" app .
Surprising lack of audio - video sync issues.
One drawback in "Camera" app is that you cannot really resize the area like you can in Adobe Premiere Elements, the other drawback is that sound recording is only by the PC soundcard.

you can get Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 & Premiere Elements 14 for around €110.
You can also get Adobe Premire Pro cc for €24.50 a month on an annual pre-paid plan, theres a trial version too but i think they've cut it back from 30 day to 7.
VEGAS Movie Studio is a set of programs that are cut down versions of Vegas Pro and within your budget
and these two are full editing programs but are free

Can someone point me in the right direction.
I video a sports day every year for a school and put it on youtube.
Except this year the editing in youtube wont let go over an hour.
I have tried windows movie maker and it is taking 6 or 7 hours just to put all the clips into 1 movie?
I do not mind paying for cheapish software but don't want to pay and find out it takes so many hours just to stitch 5 X 12 min MP4 clips together.
