Convert Vinyl LP's to MP3 or CD's

Has anyone any experience with converting old LP's to CD's or MP3's. It seems to break down to capture, splitting and then clean-up. Any recomendations, particularily in the clean-up as the capture and splitting can be covered by freeware.
