just get someone else to buy for you.

if its in a hotel - ie: a function room rented, no id required i'd say, if in a bar, you'll need one

the **** new law is that after 9pm, everyone on any licenced premises needs to carry legally acceptable ID, ie garda age card, passport, driver's licence, or some sort of bus pass if you're well above age...
however, there's exceptions, as per usual.
if it's a theatre, like the olympia or such, then you're grand.
if there's a function room booked for an occasion, you're grand then too. but if it's a 'designated area' somewhere it doesn't count it has to be a seperate room with its own bar.
that's pretty much it but nowhere's that hard to get into. steal the id of some poor innocent spanish student who bears an uncanny resemblance to yourself, and look confused when bouncers ask you for an age card and you're in anywhere.

Even if it's a private function the owners/licence holders are still perfectly within their rights to request you to produce ID as they can still be prosecuted if they serve you alcahol and you are found to be under the legal age.

It is not uncommon nowadays to be stopped entering a 21st in a local sports hall and be asked for ID.

The only place you're guaranteed not to be prosecuted for consuming alcahol underage is in a private home. It is not illegal to consume alcahol in a private residance from the age of 8 years of age (yes that is awfully young but presumabley you wouldn't be stupid enough to be giving a child of that age alcahol in the first place).
