Etain Doyle, the chairperson of the Commission for Communications Regulation, has announced she is to step down early next year.

She has informed the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources that she does not wish to be considered for re-appointment as chairperson of ComReg when her current term of office ends on the 30 of November this year.

A ComReg spokesperson said Doyle is to take part in a film-making course in New York.

Doyle said she enjoyed her time at ComReg and will remain interested in its progress and also in the broader context of Ireland's economic and IT development.

'The new EU framework is in place, 3G has been launched with just one operator to start shortly, and mobile number portability is working effectively,' she said.

'In addition, spectrum management and innovation is well-established in Ireland, the new Fixed Wireless Access Local Area (FWALA) licensees are about to be announced, which will enable small operators to complete more effectively for broadband customers. This will add some extra market pressure to the regulatory regime for DSL lines.'

Doyle added that the key postal regulation issues were set out and a new regime comes into effect shortly and the transition from the ODTR to ComReg is complete.

her tenure at COMREG has quite obviousily driven her over the edge, peeps knew that as soon as the ODTR became COMREG it was her death knell ...

OK nominations for her successor open now. Will it be an insider?

Will Ahern start recruiting tomorrow? How long till the new person is in place?
Will a two person Commission be able to take decisions in the meantime?

For the record (and I know its not popular to say it round here) - I think Etain did a lot of good in the job and we could have got a lot worse as telecoms regulator way back when.

apparently her resignation is down to the gov not giving her a company car and an early retirement scheme, mind you it was in an interview with an irish indo journo

good riddance hopefully they appoint someone with some balls to the position (actually no pun intended)

i.e. she was told to get the hell out before she was given the boot I'd imagine.

So she can step down gracefully and say that she wants to er... make movies .... er... yea...

I see her imagination hasn't developed any since the ODTR.

Dont let the door hit you on the way out.

She leaves a small pair of shoes.

Well Good Luck Etain. You started on a high note and raised a lot of hopes. Something of a flase dawn unfortunatly. There has been some good work done, and some good people employed. Hopefully your successors with the Minister's continued focus will speed up the pace of delivery.

The King is dead. Long live the King.

You can probably take it that her little disagreement with her employers was sorted out before the announcement. Otherwise she would have folded her arms and stayed in situ for as long as it took.

In which case one assumes that you are rooting for John Doherty. (Unless of course Isolda Goggin has been hiding one or two things from us..............)
