What would I need to set a PC up as a security camera to cover a 40ft square area?

40 square ft is not a lot, get a usb webcam, the logitech one I have has a "security" mode, where the software detects movement (one frame is different from the last one I suppose) and it starts recording the output ...

Would a webcam give decent quality? Ya wouldnt be able to identify someone unless the put there face right up to the camera.

I think they are up north.
The 'Geovision Capture cards' used to connect security cameras to the PC are expensive, offering from 1 frame a second to 25 fps on up to 16 cameras
