Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Question of Stadia

I was listening to Today FM there today. They reckon options are going to be put to the government about the National stadium between now and Christmas. There is now mounting pressure becuase the draw for the world cup 2006 in only a month away.

Basically there are a couple of options.

    Build 65,000 in Abbotstown
    Build 45/65,000 in Lansdowne road.
    Dont do anything.

The first option is bascially a no goer as long as the PD's are in power.

Second option is a lot cheaper but they reckon that the planning is going to be a nightmare.

Some think that the government might just do nothing, in light of budgetary concerns.

Clearly, when they do get the cash its going to be a redevelopment of landsdowne road. Hopefully to 65,000 seats but more likely 40/45,000 and Croke park is going to be opened. No other city (Madrid,Milan etc) in Europe has 2 X 65,000+ seater stadia.

The better have a roof on the new stadium in landowne road and fast track the development. The only question is where is Ireland going to play its matches until the stadium is finished?

    Time tight for FAI
    The Irish Independent
    22-November-2003
    **************************
BEHIND-the-scenes negotiations between the FAI and the Government are continuing in a bid to resolve the stadium issue.

FAI Chief Executive Fran Rooney continued his lobbying yesterday when he joined Taoiseach Bertie Ahern for the cutting of the first sod at Athlone Town's new stadium.

The prospect of having to play their home game in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers in front of 22,000 people at Lansdowne Road is not one the FAI is relishing.

But time is running out on finding a solution as the World Cup draw is on December 5 and the fixtures meeting takes place in January. The FAI will need to know before they enter the fixtures meeting where they will be playing their home games for the next two years.

The GAA can't make a decision on opening Croke Park until their Congress in April so that appears to rule the Jones Road ground out of the equation.

With the possibility of France, Spain, Italy or England in Ireland's group the likelihood of moving home games aboard continues to be very real unless a solution is found quickly.

maybe if wales werent playing at the same time we could use cardiff. but that would probably only happen about two times in qualifying

It says in the back of todays Star that the world cup qualifying matches WILL be played in a 36,000 seater Lansdowne and FIFA (or UEFA) never said that Ireland couldn't use bucket seats. Looks like it was just the FAI lying so the GAA would open Croke Park the same way the FAI apparantly lied about UEFA's warning about the Lansdowne Booing.

Although, it says here that the GAA move a step closer to opening its doors to foreign sports which would be even better. When there was a vote about foreign sports been played in Croker 2 years ago, something like 74% voted in favour and it needed to be 75%. But now the GAA chief wants that reduced to 60%. It would be fantastic watching the football from the Croker stands at last. :)
