Almost two in every five attempts by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to get broadband Internet access have failed, according to new research.

The Chambers of Commerce of Ireland e-Business Survey 2003 has said that the low adoption rates of ADSL over the last year was mainly due to lack of services in the areas surveyed. The cost of upgrading from a standard telephone line or ISDN was also identified as a contributing factor. The research for the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland e-Business Survey 2003 was conducted by Mori MRC for the CCI.

The damning report also said that one quarter of firms already connected to the Internet via ADSL are dissatisfied with broadband services. In fact, 24 percent of SME's surveyed said that they unhappy with the quality of customer support, and 28 percent are dissatisfied with the cost of their Internet connection. One quarter are dissatisfied with the speed of their Internet service, according to the wide-ranging survey of 600 SME's.

SMEs internet connection problems - Survey

Research published by the Chambers of Commerce of Ireland says many small and medium sized businesses fail in attempts to upgrade their internet connection.

The CCI says the E-Business Survey 2003, sponsored by the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment, shows that almost 40% of SMEs which tried were unable to upgrade, mainly due to lack of services available in their local area and cost factors.

CCI chief executive John Dunne said the group was concerned that internet access continued to be dominated by ISDN and standard telephone connections. The CCI blamed the slow move to broadband on 'a record of over-promising and under-delivering in many areas of new technology including telecommunications'.

Mr Dunne said the late roll-out of broadband was largely the result of resistance to deregulation and 'the relative lack of powers of the regulator'.

The survey also showed a regional divide, with internet connection rates in the West 15% below the other seven regions. Other findings were that 32% of SMEs use Revenue's online service, while 59% use online banking. 54% said viruses were a major problem.
