fyi, I got a frightening monthly bill for Sept from UTV for XL on my credit card to-day. Turns out the the phone number change which happened in parts of the 04 area resulted in UTV charging me twice - for the old number and the new number.

They are crediting my account, however the overcharge resulting from 170 hours metered internet access means no phone bills for the next 4/5 months

So, if your an XL customer whose ph number changed recently -check your bills!!

Pity you didn't check your statement before they took the money.

I was also affected by this problem ( see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?postid=1161496#post1161496 ),
and had even taken the precaution of giving UTV 3 weeks notice of the impending number change.

UTV send out an email about a week before they debit your account.
It invites you to check your statement online.
Last month I checked mine and found that
I had been billed twice for all online time,
as you say for old number and new number.

I rang UTV immediately and had an amended correct statement within 24 hours,
still 5 days before they took their payment.
They were billing me for 450 hours in total,
NONE of which qualified for flatrate
because I had updated my number!
I asked them to put a note on my account saying payment
would not be taken until the amount was confirmed,
and they seem to have done it.
(I also gave them a verbal note saying
I'd cancel the credit card before
    letting them take that payment,
    but I remained mostly calm.)

The money they took was not theirs.
By accepting the credit to your account
you've agreed to facilitate them for using a billing system
    that can't make refunds.
If you decide to leave the service, what happens?
You probably only need one month's notice at this stage,
so what about the rest of your money?
Wouldn't the money be better in your bank account
coming up to Christmas than in theirs?

I'd be very surprised if they (or Eircom, who love this credit bit too) have any right to do this.
If the customer agrees to it, that's a seperate issue,
but when they tell you it's your only option what's
    your real legal standing.
    Anyone know?

As it isnt their money and its not due., they should return the cash.

You would have a good case in the small claims court.
