Twas a great game and twas a miracle Scotland came through it. The Dutch presured the whole games and I cant see them not winning at home though.

Fair play to the Scots. They deserved it. They played well all over the park today. Having said that though, Holland missed too many chances. Especially van der Meyde.

Indeed wp Scotland but i dunno if they deserved it. On the performance in first quarter of the game yer but overall Holland deserved something.

I gotta disagree, i dont think it woulda gone in without the deflection but thats neither here nor there :)

I dont know how ya think they deserved it..

They played the most defensive game I have seen in a long long time. They had about 3 chances and the goal was lucky. Holland on the other hand, dominated the game completely and had considerably more oppurtunities and are obviously a far classier squad.. By pointing out that they missed too many chances, you are confirming this yourself. Scotland played the game with a great spirit but minimal quality. That will do just fine for one off games but quality will (should anyway) win over the two legs. I cant see Holland not going through to be honest.

If baffles me ever more that you persistently criticise Liverpool for a boring/defensive approach to football, yet applaud Scotland for it too...

well done scotland but do they stand any chance of beatin holland in the second league.

At no point in the game did I think the Scots were playing a boring defensive game and the fact that Vogts chose to start the game with McFadden, Fletcher and Naysmith on the park underlines that. Ruud Gullit admitted the Scots deserved the result at the end of the game and he pointed out most of the Dutch chances were long range efforts.

The Dutch rarely got behind the Scots defence (set pieces being the exception but the defenders on the posts covered them) and Kluiverts and Van Nistelroy were never really in it due to the excellent work of Pressley and Wilkie who both played way above their 'minimal quality.'

I don't know how you can say the Dutch "pressured the whole game" as I'd say the first half was fairly even split between the two. As you'd expect, the Dutch came at the Scots in the second half and started to show theyir greater quality. Seedorf was the real difference, and it showed as more and more came through him in the middle of the park.

And as for the goal being lucky...

jesus_thats_gre don't be so petty. The scots played well. Fair play to Wales as well for what arguably might be an even better
    result, drawing away to Russia.

good game, played at very very high tempo. scotland were always pressing and closing people down.

reminded me of our game against holland, holland had 3 or 4 goalscoring chance but wasted them. kluivert was very poor, didnt look match fit.

still think the dutch will hammer then in holland though.

jimmy would have been a better bet upfront, kluivert looked to be on a different planet (in a bad sense).

would be a great time for a club to come in with an offer, looking at GH in particular, robson or even fergie too.

Its a pity Holland dont have the same team spirit as countries like Ireland, Scotland and Wales as they could easily be the best team in the world. Can you imagine having a choice between Van Nistlerooy, Kluivert, Makaay, Van der Vaart and Hasslebaink up front. Seedorf, Davids, Overmars, Van der Meyde, Cocu, van Bronckhorst, etc, etc. in midfield. Stam, F.De Boer, Hofland, Reiziger, Ricksen at the back. And van der Sar and Westerveld in goal. They even have one of championship manager's all time greats, Arjen Robben. :D

Yeah there has always been persistent rumours surrounding Kluivert and Liverpool. Would be a nice addition to any squad.

in the pub watching the game someone made the point that a lot of Scotland's support must surely come from non-Old Firm fans.

seeing as one half thinks they're Irish and the other English - and wave flags accordingly.

Do you ever see a Scottish flag at an old firm game?

    RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH YEEEEEEEEEH BABY! :D

g'wan the scottish boys, been in australia past couple of weeks and only found out result last night, bloody fantastic!

    yes, plenty.

i know plenty of celtic fans that go to watch scotland at every opportunity including myself, but i wont go into that as im just pleased that scotland managed to get a result.

here's hoping they can pull it off over in holland aswell

    :D

It was a good professional performance. They went all out to get a goal in the first 20 minutes and they got it. It would have been stupid to try and do anymore than that. I know it was boring etc. etc. But the fact is that Scotland won the game without conceding a vital away goal. Holland may win on home soil but they'll probably get it very hard to win by two goals without conceding.

The difference between Scotland's performance the other day and Liverpool's approach over the past few years is that Scotland are at the knockout stages, where away goals are vital. Liverpool were doing it in the league in the middle of December. There is quite a big difference there.

If Holland concede a goal to Scotland, in Amsterdam I don't think they will qualify. The Scots are very good defensively and McFadden and Fletcher are good enough to cause them some problems when Scotland attack (even though they are inexperienced).

Anyone know a pub in the city which will be showing the away game. It's only on Channel 5 which you can't get on Sky or NTL as as far as I know. Getting desperate here!!!!!!

I was at the game on Saturday. The thing that surprised me was the lack of imagination in the Dutch team. These so called superstars just didn't have an answer to big Elvis and Lee Wilkie. In the end they were reduced shooting from 25-30yrds any chance they got.
And, anyone see when the dutch made their 1st sub, Kluivert ran faster than he had all day to get off the pitch, but it was Davids being subbed. The boy just could wait to get off the pitch.

Is it such a bad thing that we went in front and were forced to defend our lead. As many folk are keen to point out, they are one of the best teams in the world and we beat them.

    Alba Gu Brath.
