MUSIC fans furious at the high booking charges added onto the price of concert tickets are planning to set up an alternative ticketing site to the near monopoly enjoyed by Ticketmaster.

Website Ticeidi.com has attracted nearly 7,000 signatories to its online petition protesting against "exorbitant" handling charges.

The organisers said that matters were progressing for an alternative site as a competitor to Ticketmaster and there had been several discussions in this regard.

A survey by the Tralee Institute of Technology earlier this year showed that booking fees have risen by an average of 80pc a year since 1993.

Consumers are particularly irate at having to pay handling fees and booking charges of over 10pc on each ticket rather than per transaction.

Ticketmaster said they offer a good value 24-hour booking service and that the market is completely open to competition.

Good luck to them. Tickmaster so often insist on those exclusive contracts to prop up their monopoly. They'd have to take it one gig at a time.

Why are ticketmaster not forced to include all charges upfront in the prices. Eg . Ticket is €65 end of story not Ticket is €50 plus €15 in "charges"

I've used Ticketmaster before and found it very handy and efficient. What absolutely sickens me is the charge - not because there is one - but rather, as mentioned, it's applied per ticket. €20-€30 extra charges are nothing short of utter robbery. No amount of processing a single transaction could ever come near to that cost!

    It is what it's.

They don't have even close to a monopoly in the UK there are several different companies plus alot of venues (both large and small) run their own booking.

I find it a strange coincidence that ticketmaster does not sell tickets for the National Concert Hall. I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that the NCH does not charge ANY booking fee if purchasing tickets online with a crefit card?? Poor ticketmaster obviously can't get their cut out of the NCH. It's a pity other venues would not do the same...

As someone has already said, Ticketmaster will often do exclusivity deals with promoters, taking a smaller cut of the _ticket price_ than usual, but then they get to keep the booking fee all for themselves!. Sure, they've been in bed with MCD for a long long time!

Why? How would that improve things? Will you be happier living in blissful ignorance not knowing what the charges are?

blockchain is the ideal answer for this - that or each venue organises ticketing themselves....they would generate a shedload more cash for themselves aswell tbh.

The drop-off in retail bookings means that TM's days of being able to charge that is definitely limited. Eventbrite have made major inroads over here, Skiddle and Ticketweb in the UK and so on. Most of those offer telephone sales/support still; a service without that would have lower overheads again.
