I'm planning on heading to Dublin next week to get a new car. Course I know feck all about Dublin, so god knows what I'm going to do.

When I get the new car, I'll have to get rid of the old one somehow. It's a 91 mkII Fiesta, so it's probably for the breaker's yard. It's got NCT until next Sept, has just been serviced and is running fine. It's a shame to scrap a perfectly good car, but unless I could find a dealer to take it off me (not easy with such an old car) I can't be bothered selling it. So, anybody know a scrapyard in Dublin that will give me a few quid for it for the sake of parts?

The next thing is the new car. Odds are it'll already have a good alarm, but I might want to fit an even better one. I also want to put in a fuel cut-off, a phone kit, stereo and satellite tracking. It'd be great if I could find one place to install all this, especially at short notice. Can somebody recommend someone, or should I be looking for individual specialists for each piece of equipment?

There is a place in Ranelagh (opposite Sandford Road School) that specialises in car phones, alrms and stereo systems.

So you're going from a Fiesta to a 911, or why do you think you need Fort Knox security suddenly?

If you're buying a new(-ish) car it will have an immobiliser that is practically undefeatable as standard. Spending stupid money on alarms is a waste of time. It's useful to have an alarm so you know if somebody has broken into the car, but factory fitted immobilisers are better than any aftermarket fitted alarm as far as preventing somebody from driving away with the car.

Satellite tracking can be useful, but they're expensive and you usually need to pay for tracking. You usually need another GSM phone subscription as well. Unless your new car is something very valuable or very likely to be stolen, I wouldn't bother with it. RM Distribution and others do satellite tracking systems and everything else you were looking for.

Da Man is right, satellite tracking is a waste of money and most factory alarms are enough to protect your car, although alarms with remote starts are cool, ah such fun! :D

The best (and pretty much only) way to steal a new car these days is to break into the house it's parked outside and steal the keys. Happened to a (vague) acquaintainance of mine twice. The second time it came back with sh1t all over the white leather seats.

    - I'm sorry I can't remember which one, but I know one manufacturer is offering 1500 scrap allowance against old cars. Might be handy if you're buying a brand new car. Anyone know which one it is - there's billboards posted up around town

if yer old car has an NCT and the bodywork is ok then you should be able to flog it for a few hundred euros - stick an ad in the buy and sell.

Almost. If I park it on the street outside my house every night it will be robbed. It's not a question of if.

Aye, it'll probably have an immobiliser and alarm already, but I want all the deterrent I can get. I certainly don't want professionals breaking into my hourse to nick the keys.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Any more places where they could fit a stereo, phone kit, etc. at short notice?
