this is interesting, on fileplanet, the Deus Ex 2 demo is out for 24 hours to subscribers only, although I'm not sure on what the story is about the whole 24 hour thing (assumingly its only up for 24 hours  ) but i read over on gametab that the demo is out to the public in a day or so? I find a lot of this quite strange...marketing tactics seem to get worse every year ( can't think of any other for the rime being though..). well me being a subscriber, I'm off to download it! :p

surely it's out on all the p2p apps as we speak?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭Squall

Ide imagine thats for hte benefit of the Subscribers, yunno less pppl downloading so more bandwidth available for them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

tman: unless someone's uploaded it, the gamespy EZpad prevents it from being linked to a p2p program (somehow, im not sure).

squall: its not to do with bandwith i'd say because the subscribers get subscriber only servers so there's no wait etc etc.

    only 10 hours left...:)

Ya ide imagine its something along those lines

the right answer is you! since this being a demo and not 200 megs of lesbian pornography as it usually ends up being, heres the torrent file which will enable you to get the demo and end up in hell afterwards for using file sharing programs!!11

Has anyone actually tried to play it?
It's unplayable for me for some reason, on the following system:

    XP2500
    1Gb ram
    9800 PRO

    :(

I remember the original being a bitch to get running properly.
But once i got it tweaked it was brilliant.

runs fine for me at 1280x1024 with axp 2600+, 768 ram, 9700 pro - there are some little graphical glitches but that's just the demo itself. the only thing i dont have at max is multisampling, which is at about 2x i think

I have an 64MB Geforce 4 on one of my machines and it won't run. Says it needs a video card with a 1.1 pixel shader or something.

Works with a Radeon 9600 though.

On another note the demo is extremely short. For the filesize I was expecting a good bit more. I suppose it gives an overall view of how the game will play though.

Looks like it could be on a par with th original if not better.

ran quite well at 1024 on a 2200+ and ti4600. There is mouse lag which can make it feel a bit disjointed, and the fact that the keys remap themselves to default at every load (load from save, load of section etc.). And yes, it is very short, more just to show off the physics a bit (shooting barrels), and the facial stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 597 ✭✭✭bambam

couldn't play it on my geforce 440 go :( - though feedback from eidos forums seems less than positive...

For those having probs with the mouse - there is a demo tweaker available that apparently fixes it --- ftp://ftp2.extreme-players.de/hosting/dxzone/dx2/demo/DXIW_Demo_Tweaker.exe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

yeah the demo is a bit short but the fact that you can go at it at basically any angle gives it a lot of replay value. but yeah the whole thing about the keys remapping does my head in after a while

The demo ran like a dog with half a leg tbh. P4 2.4ghz @ 2.9, 512MB PC3700, GeForce FX 5600 Ultra 128meg. Most annoying. The mouse felt like crap and the settings resetting themselves is a joke. Does anyone have a different link to that demo tweaker? I can't get it from that FTP and I can't find it through Google.

strange that u guys are having probs, i ran it on my 733mhz 384 megs of ram geforce 3 POS and it was playable with everything turned down.

funniest part, shot the guard, took his flamethrower and just burned every1 alive - all of them running around screaming for water.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,468 ✭✭✭Lex_Diamonds

If you want the thing to stop resetting your settings just go to the user.ini file and remove its read only property.

Great demo btw, cant wait for the full game.

Very playable for me, though again - it ought to be. Dunno if Id call it a great demo though. The key mapping kept resetting every time i went into the menu to save a game, the physics are weird with bodies absolutley jackknifing all over the place if you hit them, graphics are acceptable/not an issue really, but there seems to be a real lack of polish in the demo which is disturbing - the newscasters interview with the order spokeswoman was woeful - it was obvious the talk show host was meant to be interupting the Order woman but with pauses of 4-5 seconds between the woman stopping and the host "interrupting" it was just plain annoying. Minor, yeah, but along with the rest it indicates a real "couldnt give a damn" about the whole thing.

Weapon damage still irritates me from the original Deus Ex - has anyone found a use for that cattle prod apart from making the guards angry? Its woeful for silent takedowns as you need to hit them like 10 times, the "ROF" is slow, and the guard will eventually get lucky and get a shot off dragging out all his friends. Most of the other guns are similarly pants - might as well use them to beat people over the head with. That said the AI has at least improved to the point where if they see you unarmed , but are "alerted" they wont automatically assume youre the troublemaker and start shooting you which is slightly better than the "shoot first - ask questions later" mentality. When badly wounded theyll also sometimes drop their weapons and "surrender" which is nice. I liked the simplification of unifying the ammo count, let you concentrate on what was important rather than being an accountant.

Dunno - wasnt as impressive as I hoped it would be, certainly hasnt made it a "must buy" for me. Ive heard that its gone gold in the meantime so I dont imagine theyve taken much feedback from the demo either. Reminds me of similarly prestigious sequel which flopped:|

Would that be a certain FPS with a certain mining corporation named Liandri?

I still havent dloaded this and by the sounds of it i might just not. I dont want to not get it so ill skip the demo and hope the proper release is a bit better sand. (i know smacks of stupidity but thats me :p )

Apparently patches will be forthcoming for the various issues with the game, im still convinced it will be a great game.

Didnt like the demo at all. GFX are alright but nothing to write home about, music is cool and about the only good thing in the demo, gameplay is awful with dreadful hit detection and very lose controls. Its nothing more than a Xbox port to the pc and suffers from this fact badly.

The universal ammo, tiny inventory and simplistic gameplay drop this game down from being a sequal to a kick ass game to being another run of the mill console port. They designers have managed to take out all the really cool stuff that was in Deus Ex out and rush out a bog standard FPS shooter. Warren Spector the man behind the original and games such as System Shock 1+2 and Thief 1+2 seems to think that those games (that are classics in the pc gaming industry) needed to be dumbed down or in other words made for console's.

Well at least there Doom3 and HL2 to look forward to.

Had a discussion to this effect on Boards.ie recently. The pc platform suffers most in multi platform releases. This is another example. You will get a perfectly functional X-box game and a PC version thats not up to scrath with the Pc market and requires a henious amount of patching to work properly. (sorry about the long sentence.. its Warren Spectre's fault)

what really annoys me about the demo is I never win the damn Gob Fight bets.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭satchmo

Hardly an exciting demo.. I played it through once, went "meh" and uninstalled it.

I've got to say I think the physics are woeful. Considering they're using similar technology (ie Havok) to Max Payne 2, there's a big difference in quality. In MP2 when you shot somebody they fell believably against walls, or just slumped to the ground - DX2's bodies just feel paper-light, not believable at all. Actually I think the character animation overall is quite poor (except for the facial animation, that's impressive enough), and hardly any improvement on the first game.

There are defintiely some glaring problems with the demo, the question is do these extend to the full game. It is dissappointingly short, which is worrying, one of Deus Ex big appeals was the amount of exploring you could do, and the level of detail that went into everything. Seems to have gone the other way here, Spector and co. promised a geographically smaller world, but with more to do, seems as if they've just made it geographically smaller, and put very little in there, possibly even less than the original. Also, and this is a pet peeve, the "lean" function is gone...why? Leaning was awesome in the first game, personally I'm dissappointed that the skills system is gone, I feel it gave the first game even more variety in terms of gameplay.

To be fair, I think a lot of that in making some of the changes like removing the skills system, making the ammo cross-weapon, and slimming down the biomod system they were trying to make it more accessible, but the beauty of Deus ex to begin with was that it took all these elements from other genres, boiled them down to the essentials, and blended them into a perfect game. In changing this formula they've really done themselves, and us an injustice.

All I can say is I hope the demo is juat a really bad showcase for the final game, and if not, then at least we should still have the same freeform gameplay...although to be honest even that seems dumbed down in the demo...*sigh*

Thats crazy talk - stop talking crazy talk.
There are defintiely some glaring problems with the demo, the question is do these extend to the full game.

Id reckon so - demos have never usually been for feedback purposes - the public are generally useless for feedback as for every issue/problem some people will claim its game wreaking, others that its sufferable, others still that its not a problem but a feature, and still others will claim its not the games fault, but the players:| Swing by the official UT2k3 forums and check it out for yourself.

Its quite likely with a released demo its there to boost sales - what you see is more than likely what youll get when you open the box on release. I learned the hard way with the aforementioned sequel ( which isnt an awful game, just not better than the original and was unbelievably dissapointing upon release ).

I dunno - will any of the "big" fps type games due out soon live up to the dreams/expectations of their fans in reality - a reality in which game design is constrained by having to fit onto a console as well, where hype sells over quality so why invest in quality when you can squeeze a bit more into the marketing budget? I dont believe all the hype about doom 3 either. Please god let thief 3 be good, please god.

The game sucks... i first found this when i went into some bedrome and some chick started shooting at me. 3 head shots later and she is still gunning me. Crappy sonsole port. Slow moving enemy AI with lots of hit point s to make it fun! will not be buying this. thanks mr. Spector for becoming a sell out to the platform that made you.

Firstly, to address problem regarding key-mapping/other settings ...
Find User.ini [in My Docs usually afaik], and untick read-only, for some reason it installs user.ini as read only, so settings dont stick [hopefully fixed in full version]

    I Ran it on a XP2400, winXP, 512ram, radeon 9000 pro, 800x600, 2x multisampling.
Must say it brought back memories of Deus Ex 1, on y p2 300, 128ram, tnt2 ... not the smoothest - although still quite playable.

In regards to the demo I thought it was excellent - It's not Deus Ex 1, it's a completely different game, physics, gameplay, style, engine, and interface.
Not too keen on interface must admit, but thought physics engine was brillant, threw barrels, and people around for at least 20mins.

Dislike idea of single ammo-type ... but again it's a change to the game, and a new style to play/try out, if game developers kept to the same rules, nothing would change, and game styles would be static.

Length-wise I think it's about right, I don't want to play half the game, then buy it, only to re-do it again, demo ... demonstration, it gives a sample of the game, and a rough idea what the full version shall be like.

Hopefully a lot of bug fixes + performance issues will be solved in the full release [feb i believe, or today in america].

Overall i'd say very good, they changed it enough, so it's not a addon disguised as a sequal, looking forward to it's release.

I've downloaded it and I'll have a look at it this evening. No matter what, though, I've lost faith. I doubt if it'll be anywhere close to the original. And no SDK. The consoles are ripping everything I love about gaming to pieces and this is the best example yet. Shorter, dumbed-down games with no facilities for modders, i.e. a console port.
