REM dvd containing porn!?!

I recently bought a copy of R.E.M. - Parallel for my son (aged 12). I assumed that it would be fine, its a DVD of music videos by the band, and they are quite a respectable band.

However, i was watching it today (and i presume he's watched it all by now) and i've noticed some VERY worrying things.

Tracks 5, 10 and possilby other all contain scenes of completely naked people, i mean EVERYTHING is visible. I was extremely angry at this, and i want to Bitch and moan to someone about this. What can i do? Nothing on the cover alerted me to the fact that completely naked people appear throughout the dvd!!!

Any thoughts on this are welcome.

Amazon.co.uk tells me that the DVD is rated 15s, and has a Parental Warning label on it. If your copy doesn't have these labels on it, you have a right to complain. If it does, you should have checked more carefully.

I believe there are two versions of the video though - one is censored, probably lower-rated.

    Exactly.
Censoring your son's viewing will only lead to repression and won't solve anything.

Is this a joke? Your son is 12 years old, I'm sure hes seen more than that on TV and your hardly going to shield him from the facts of life forever.

I think its you who needs a bit of growing up

Yeah the video for Nightswimming has naked people swimming in it if I remember correctly. Nice video.

Just nudy bits. I'm sure he's jerking off to worse about six times a day.

    I wouldnt stress about it!

    1. Its only people been naked.

    2. If you have net access i'm sure he's seen worse(I certainly did see worse online at 12)

You should have posted this on the parenting forum.

I agree wholeheartedly, and while i have not seen the DVD, I very much doubt this is porn.

Hmm Teaching you son that being naked and nudity is something wrong and perverse will only lead to problems later in life. I know of one of the tracks you speak of and there's nothing sexual about it in the least. Maybe your pissed because you put your faith in the media to raise your child and now they have let you down? Bottom line is if you have a problem with this type of thing, then you should have examined the DVD more closely. I think your real problem is that you don't what to face the fact that your little boy is starting a journey where he will son be a young man, and you want him to hold onto his innocence. I truth you have already had a the little talk with him? Did you expect him to go through life completely ignorant?

REM rock btw, and well done to your son for having taste/.

You could switch on the Parental control on the DVD player and it will stop the DVD from showing for your son if it did have questionable material.

Or if the DVD had the option it would reconise the parental control and show the censored option.

Otherwise your SOOL to complain if there was a warning on the DVD cover and startup of the DVD.

My parents just gave me a book and told me to read it. It had drawings of people with no clothes on, and captions like "This is a boy, and this is a girl. Can you tell the difference?"

    Sounds about right.

hrm.. i suppose i did overreact a bit, but it was the least likely place for me to see naked ppl running around the screen. I don;t doubt he's seen worse, but c'mon, how many people go out and buy a dvd as innocent looking as that, and find several tracks with that!

To be honest would have expected it, especially if its the track I'm think of. When ever it was on TV is was clearly censored, buying the DVD you would expect it to be uncensored. Your son probably knew.

tbh, if it said Parental Advisory you shoulda at least taken the time to look through it before giving the kid the DVD. Or looked at it the first time with him.

    It is what it's.

This is not really related to the topic but I was just thinking, would getting the Britney/Christina Aguilera dvd for a 12 yr old be worse than seeing naked people in that REM video even though there's no naked ladies on those dvds?

Obviously not our role to lecture anyone on parenting.

However I don't think a big deal should be made out of this. Look at the full nudity in advertising on the Continent, it will surely hit Ireland soon enough (if it hasn't already).

After all, we are not in America.

    Hmmm,
Anyone, whether they are 12 or 112 or whatever can take a two week trial of real player superpass.
Which has most of the REM videos including nightswimming available on demand.
Great music, great video's and I lurve broadband:D
I don't see what the fuss is about to be honest.

    mm
