In addition to the banners you could also add Google Adsense adverts. They are highly relevant text adverts with very generous payment terms and a huge site like this could make a lot of money. :ninja:

Yeah I did look at them but they seemed like a ripoff before. Maybe I did the math wrong :):)

Unfortunately Google Adsense doesn't like vBulletin and similar as much as it does static content, so a lot of the ads would probably be 'public service' ads which don't pay

Blacknight, I think the session id problem has been ironed out since google stopped putting too much emphasis on the string variables in the url. Anyway, the vbulletin site itself has numerous topics and workarounds on the subject.

As for public service adverts, you will get those on new topics but once a page has been spidered they will usually serve related adverts to the topic or stock adverts related to your site.

Why not put up the boards.ie budget (em ... in balance sheet form), once every year. You have boards.ie registered as a company (or you used to right? tell me i'm not going insane) and have to do this for the cro or revenue anyway right?

T'would shut up all these peeps and show transparancy and build confidence (and other such crap )

edited to put the "do" into: have to do this, oops  ;)

When I'd read all of this thread, I went to take a look at the top left of the page to see how flashy the current ad was, and noticed, hey wait a tic, it's just a black blank space up there. I'd switched to camino from IE a few weeks ago, and hadn't even noticed the loss of the ads. THAT'S how obtrusive they are ConZ you wankstain. I've only been here a few months, but even I can see you don't know what your on about.

I'm sure you have posted this elsewhere ... but I'm not sure where to look. Just exactly how many page impressions and unique visitors is boards.ie getting every week?

This site is worth a fortune. I'd say those banner ads must are all be undervalued. If you started thinking about boards.ie more like a business, instead of a hobby and actively marketed your advertising services, instead of waiting for the advertisers to get in touch with you.

You could easily live off this website. But because you don't NEED to live off it, you're happy to keep it as a hobby - so I guess that's good too. :)

A time will come when to stop it shaking itself apart someone will need to actively look after it. As it is most of my waking hours are spent doing something with Boards. I do enjoy it so it is a hobby I guess. It might be nice to do a Penny-arcade on it and actually make a living from it but the fact is that as it gets bigger and thus more problematic, it also fuels more ads and therefore more possibility of someone working part time on it.

I dont know that the site could support even one person full time. I know that it certainly *wont* if that meant popups, interstitials, selling mailing lists or any of that nonsense. I'd rather shut it down and look back fondly on it then do anything like that. I think most/all of the admins would agree that, though I'm probably the most militant against it.
(I turned down a popup campaign just yesterday in fact).

    DeV.

Do you how many unique visitors and page impressions you are getting every week or month? Or do you want to keep that to yourself? :)

I think everyone knows that you would never stoop to the popups/selling mailing list/etc level. That's just another one of the many reasons why you're so popular.

I still think that you could be making better use of that inventory, put up the rates and market those banner ads.

Personally I dont have a problem with the advertisements on boards

as for whether or not they are making a profit. so what if they are they give of their time and effort to put together a wonderful site and fair play to them if they do make an extra few bob for themselves.

As long as they stay away from ads that obstruct what I want to read like some of the flash ads i have seen on http://movies.yahoo.com then Im happy

    thx daveirl.

so almost 3,000,000 page impressions a month. hmm. that would be hard for one person to 'live off' alright.

but a very nice part-time income.

unless of course you pack up your bags and run boards.ie from a country where the cost of living is a lot less ... it's always an idea :)

Aye, we've been publishing stats for quite a while now. "Victor-Porn" as I call it :):)

We havent done a great deal with the site because of the continued delay of VBB 3.0
Thats probably going to change as I notice more sites running RC Gamma.
I'm working on getting our old server for a dev-server and then we can *really* start to do things with the site.

This year was a mad/bad year for the admins, lost of real life stuff impinging on us too. We're still running at about 200,000 sessions a month and about 7-7.5K unique users a quarter. I havent checked those stats in a month or two so they may be a little higher.

Theres no reason we wouldnt share this info with you... someday our numbers will stop rising I guess for some unforseen limit/reason maybe but *shrug* only people are scared of people seeing their figures would hide them. Currently I couldnt care less :):)

I know I'm in the in-crowd now (a) there is a phrase named after me (b) I feature in an ad. :)

I really have to apologice for the low December figures, lots of people are doing real life TM things and are failing to incite me into posting.

~3000 (spent on hardware, memory, HDD, tax liabilities and a meal for the admins).
I'm unlikely to publish these in future to anyone except the mods (who have something of a right to know as they help out round here) and maybe the supporters. Everyone else is a "cost" and a bandwidth drain :):)

As a limited company we are bound to publish our accounts with the CRO you know, all companies are, if you really want to know.

Just a thought – with banner adverts just leading to a page with why and how to become a subscriber - would it be a good idea to advertise the subscription packs?

I don't get what this is all about? If your being genuine, can you clear up what this is all about?

I dont even know what it is that you think you have just published, can you tell me?

I'm sure the mod and supporters will be please to know that.

    I didn't realise I was merely a bandwidth drain. "I'm a real boy" - Shrek, hehe ;)

Well, I was asking you "kind-of", I should have made it clearer. Thanks for clarifying though.
