we've just realised we need to get some music for baby. Can anyone recommend a CD for singing along too, soothing for bedtimes etc. Most of the stuff we've seen is for toddlers not for babies and is too upbeat. I intend making some of my own mixes from our own music but I was wondering what other people do.

    how about the muppets?

I can't remember the name of the album, perhaps someone else can

    it has such songs as

    it's not easy being green
    half way up the stairs
    and that all time classic

    Lydia the Tattooed Lady

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
    Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
She has eyes that folks adore so,
and a torso even more so.
    Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo.
On her back is The Battle of Waterloo.
Beside it, The Wreck of the Hesperus too.
And proudly above waves the red, white, and blue.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

    La-la-la...la-la-la.
    La-la-la...la-la-la.

When her robe is unfurled she will show you the world,
if you step up and tell her where.
For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paree,
    or Washington crossing The Delaware.

    La-la-la...la-la-la.
    La-la-la...la-la-la.

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
    Lydia The Tattooed Lady.
    When her muscles start relaxin',
up the hill comes Andrew Jackson.
    Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Queen of them all.
For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz,
with a view of Niagara that nobody has.
And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz.
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

    La-la-la...la-la-la.
    La-la-la...la-la-la.

Come along and see Buffalo Bill with his lasso.
Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso.
Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon.
Here's Godiva, but with her pajamas on.

    La-la-la...la-la-la.
    La-la-la...la-la-la.

Here is Grover Whelan unveilin' The Trilon.
Over on the west coast we have Treasure Isle-on.
    Here's Nijinsky a-doin' the rhumba.
    Here's her social security numba.

    La-la-la...la-la-la.
    La-la-la...la-la-la.

    Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia.
Oh Lydia The Champ of them all.
She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet.
The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat.
And now the old boy's in command of the fleet,
for he went and married Lydia!

    I said Lydia...
    (He said Lydia...)
    They said Lydia...
    We said Lydia, la, la!

    sorry
    couldn't help it....
    :D

time to trawl back through you memorires to what your parents squaked at you :)

there are some that are old classics like teddy bears picnic and what ever less take your fancy, my mother used to sing beatles songs to me .

children will not judge what your voice sounds like as you try to carry a tune in a bucket, they will be happy to hear your voice and coo along with you.

A certain song sung to them at bed time while thye snuggle in your arms cot/crib can become part of the routine so that later on it becomes a triiger and you can get them to sleep by humming it.

light Piano music can be good for kids to the likes of chopan and mozart . I started My two off with certain clasical pieces and mood music before they were born.
from 5 mnth of the pregnancies onward it was a hour or so off mammy time out and baby listen time this way they knew the pieces of music and hearing them outside the womb they were as familar as my voice.

and it is always fun when they start to learn to talk and join in the odd word or when you have put them to bed to hear them singing to themselves :)

If you go down to the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go down to the woods today
    You'd better go in disguise

For ev'ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

Ev'ry Teddy Bear who's been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There's lots of marvelous things to eat
    And wonderful games to play

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
'Cause that's the way the Teddy Bears have their picnic

If you go down to the woods today
    You'd better not go alone
It's lovely down in the woods today
But safer to stay at home

For ev'ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

    Picnic time for Teddy Bears
The little Teddy Bears are having a lovely time today
    Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday.

    See them gaily gad about
    They love to play and shout;
    They never have any care;

At six o'clock their Mummies and Daddies,
Will take them home to bed,
Because they're tired little Teddy Bears.

While I appreciate the effort, I think I'll need a book and a CD.

From my experience with our two, although mainly James who's mad about most music, drum and bass stuff works a treat. Anything that has a nice strong steady beat to it - or anything you can buy in a record store by way of a 'chillout album' - anything like that is good. You don't have to restrict kids to specifically kids music. If you play them something you find relaxing, chances are they'll find it much the same.

When Eve was very tiny (she's only 6 months old now), she loved the soundtrack to 'The English Patient' which has some gorgeous music on it. We used to put it on for her to fall asleep with every night. Have a dig through whatever you have in your own collection and I bet there's something that'll work a treat!

If the worst comes to the worst, I've yet to find a little one who didn't respond well to 'rock-a-bye baby' sung by it's parents! :)

our little guy (not so little now) used to really love Italian folk songs - like the stuff from the Godfather & theres some Maria Lanza cd's, very gentle & easygoing. Used to hum along with them and all. Babies' hearing is really sharp tho' our kids hate too loud stuff or heavy bass sounds.

Sorry you didnt say how old baby (s) is (are)
I found that the song that relaxed them most were ones their mum may have listened to while pregnant. to keep mine quiet and to get them to listen simply put on Coro street music. (mother is total addict and silence must ensue)
Play whatever you like to listen to depending on mood that you want your children to adopt.
It works while they are very young anyway or at least it did for me.
    Have a good one:)

Our little lad (enigizer toddler!) loves trance music, and er.. Arlo Guthre's "alices resturant"!...its a pretty big mp3

I just played it for him this evening & he swayed from side to side in rythem to the song (naturaly:p )....... while he shredded another smiths catalog (handy those!) :D

ditto ur mentor on the corrie btw. also eastenders theme! He shuts up for them completely

The one that really tops the polls is the add for some butter spread - girlfriend/wife/whatever butter the toast while eyeing partner who snaps at the toast with his teath a few times before he catches it. Its a pretty boring advert but my son loves it & laughs & claps when its over! ?

If you offer enough beer, I'm sure Beruthiel & Thaed will create an impressive collection LIVE at the next boards beer bash!!!
    :D

Umm some ideas there alright. Not a soap fans so I hope he doesn't like those. Have tried some movie soundtrack albums so far. But I'll have to mix out the over dramatic ones I reckon. Hes hasn't taken to any of my metal or dance albums yet either. Seems to like Madonna last album though.

I'd concur with that - you can get chillout classical stuff quite cheap (no need to pay the composer).

What might be important is something to drown out sudden background noise.

Umm chillout classical stuff never though of that. They say Strauss is good for babies. Funny you should mention "sudden background noise" he seems to jump at that kind of a sound. Especially velcro for some odd reason. From the moment he was born the sound of velcro makes him jump.

Some great info so far. Actually our little babe seems to like all those dire popstar shows at the moment. Unfortunately on standard cable MTV seems to show very little music these days. On digitial theres a lot more music to choose for. Probably one of the few reasons we might get it. Lot more kiddie TV shows too.

panpipes is really soothing for babies. disney has an album aswell with old songs from cinderella etc but studies show that music heard by babies can effect their moods as they grow older, thus panpipes or even classical music could prove beneficial to babies state of mind in long run
