A friend of mine just went to order stuff off cd-wow.com.hk and tried to pay by laser as usual, then got the message 'You cannot pay HK Dollars with a Laser card'.

    What on earth?

Laser is only in Ireland IIRC, so you can only carry out transactions in Euros with Laser (and only within Ireland).

No, cdwow use worldpay which accepts laser. I've ordered off the hong kong site using laser many times. I ordered off it last week and paid with my visa electron card and it worked....and electron isn't a card used in hong kong so....

Write To Mary Harney ( minister@entemp.ie ) and tell her that our rights to a free choice are being infringed by this. Mary is big into choice ...see below

ah but Visa electron is connected to the Visa Network - can be used all over. Laser cannot.

cdwow.ie allow Laser, but it is not shown on the cdwow.com.hk site.

    see this faq from Worldpay:

if that website is based in hongkong. then neither eu nor irish government can put a leg on it.

Laser is an Irish debit card and as such can only be used in Ireland, just as Switch or Delta cards from the UK can't be used in Ireland. The one exception is that some Laser cards now come with a Maestro tag on them which allows you to use them abroad just like at home (I was able to use my Bank of Ireland laser card in Amsterdam last year), but I've never seen a website with the Maestro brand on it.

Our lovely (Irish) Ryanair refuse to take (Irish) laser cards. They take Switch though!!

Is the point of this thread not "That previously laser could be used on the .hk site"?
AFAIK if you go through http://www.cdwow.com.hk it will redirect you to I think the UK site, and you can use laser there no probs. You get a drop down of all the different currencies!?!

They DID, until recently. As I said, I ordered a CD from the hk site with my laser card about 6 weeks ago.
