    anybody care to enlighten me as to what this means? (and how to sort it without a reformat)

    STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
    The registry cannot load the hive (file):
    \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SAM
    or its log or alternate.
    It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Dumping physical memory to disk: *counts up*

    It's accompanied by a blue screen, which of course normally isnt good. After a while it restarts, goes thru checking the disk for consistency and then goes back to the same error above. As I'm none too experienced with XP Pro going the way of the dinosaur I'll have to take a guess and say the registry has packed in. Any ideas or suggestions would be great, I cant afford to lose all the data on my laptop.

    Off to trawl thru the MS website now.

    Can you start in Safe Mode?
    If not then do a windows repair, booting from the XP CD.

    yeah the hive is f*cked. This could of been caused by the registry file becoming too large. Have you any ERD disks? If not you may need to use the recovery console to copy your 'system' file to the hive location

    i followed the directions here and got the thing running again. Seem to have completely blitzed the old registry as no system restore points were available so I'm in the process of reinstalling everything at the moment.

    Most important thing though is that I didnt lose all my accounts, invoices, porn, etc...

    Thanks for the help lads.
