ok, so a file was deleted on a network drive on a P2P network, win2k.

norton's protected recycle bin on the "server" has all files in it but the one I am missing.

also, the contents of the file (excel file BTW) were copied and immediatly deleted from the clipboard on the client machine. Is there a way to retrieve it from the swopfile or a temporary file of some sort?

ive looked at a lot of different temporary files on both machines to no avail. Ive also ran PC inspector and R-Studio NTFS with no luck either.

are there any other "rules" for undeleting files from network shares?

any help greatly appricated, i can get back files fromsix months ago, but not from six hours!

    Don't know anything 'bout norton,

And chances are the file on the server was overwritten. - Perhaps one of the norton utilities could retreive it (guess) ?

On the client check the temp folder as there is an tiny chance it might have left a temporary file there of the right date/size - rename to .XLS (changes are remote and only works if excel crashed 'cos it cleans up when exits)

In excel there is no option to "Always make backup copies" but you can File-Save As - Options - Backup, you have to say Yes to overwrite the existing file (scary the first time you do it) and from then on that ONE FILE will have .XLK files saved as well - repeat for other files.

Remind the User that if they didn't consider their work important enough to make backups .... Also tell them that microsoft don't care about their data - eg: the Backup option is hidden and excel files do become corrupt on a regular basis..

No idea if you can retrieve stuff from the pagefile - but' you might have to switch off the PC to stop it being cleaned down. - While you could do a search for text - excel data would probably be mush ..

All in all sounds like the amount of work needed to recover is less than that needed to rebuild the file..
