umm, note to self: never put a cracked disk in a 52x cd drive.

it had a small crack on the inner circle, still worked fine ... until now. Just a loud *BANG* and I tilt my pc sideways and little bits of windows 2000 cd fall out. I wonder will they send me a replacement if I post the shards to microsoft ....

chances are the drive is ****ed too (it was really loud).

    d'oh.

i know 2 people that had the same experience.
if the drive is boned, it is repairable under warranty.
don't like your chances on a new windows cd though.

    It's a known problem with drives >40x.

Especially if you try writing a slightly dodgy cd-r at 52x (my 52x burner will only burn at 52x if you activate the manual override, otherwise it'll burn at 40x).

Had to open up the drive to get all the bits out of it. Made a few coasters but it seems to be writing and reading okay now, phew.

I'd be tempted to cut a window in it and try and blow up another one, I'd say it could survive, there is only one bit of plastic inside that is broken and it doesn't look important. Maybe if I took the back and sides off I could turn it into a weapon of mass destruction!!

    :ninja:

That happened to my friend in college :D
We were playing a cracked game directly for cd's
so we'd been playing for about 2 hours when bang!
His cd-rom drive opened about a centimeter and these shards came flying out!
I pulled the tray out full and cleaned it quickly and closed it.
We put another disc in and it read it!
but we quickly scampered away none the less and took our gaming to another lab for a week or two!
    ...happy days!

Did that to my Aopen 16x DVD (40x cd) drive (slot loading mechanism).
Snapped the lens head armature in half.
Your drive is more than likely toasted.
Everything else is fine, maybe need to clean lens, but unless you can replace the arm, the drive is junk.
