My mate has a heavily modded Civic, and from what he tells me the best cars for modding are
Civics, Corsas, Puntos, Escorts, Focus (Focii?), Golfs

Basically any small to medium family hatchbacks would be the most common and would have the most kits available for them. And as well as that these cars would be fairly cheap to buy 2nd hand.

I have a Focus which I modify. Its quite good for modding, there is a lot of parts available and if you want info on anything there are plenty of sites...

    FFoc.co.uk
    Focaljet.com
    myfordfocus.com

MOD EDIT: There was no need for that. As I've stated earlier this thread is not for arguing for or against modding. Start a seperate thread if you wish.

Thanks for the links and info btw!

MOD EDIT: Please see the link below for discussion on car modding. I am starting to get tired of having to keep coming back to this thread again and again. The next person that tries to start an argument will be the cause for this thread's deletion and a ban for their good self.

    Thanking you all.

What about the Punto HGT ? It's got a turbo that can be tweaked !

The Civic always looks well if done properly, WingsWest do the best kits for Honda's, expensive though !

yea i think Civic is nice!

i don't really care about the looks of the car, i want fast car, i don't like neon lights and stuff, all i care about is a motor

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,494 ✭✭✭kayos

Well if its pure preformance you want there are a hell of a lot of options

Personnally I would recommend any of the VAG 1.8 20VT engined cars which range in power from 150BHP to 225BHP as standard (chip, exhaust should see around the 200BHP mark from a 150BHP engine) or if you dont mind an oil burner the VAG PD 130 or PD 150 engines are well fit to go (add a tuning box and you get even more fun).

If I had the money I would be buying a VW Corrado selling the stock engine and then sticking a 1.8 20VT lump in there with a few extra bits and you would have one of the best handling FWD cars with loads of power.

Most of the Jap racers are much harder to insure and to get the same power as a 1.8T you normally are looking at a 2Litre engine thus increased tax (around €450 for a year on a 1.8L so it would be around €550-€600 for a 2L) and insurance.

Thats what i like to hear! No bodykit bandits plz! Yeh the civic is a great car, nice lookin, quite good on petrol and depending on the model, (my favourite being the 92-95 SiR model) you'd have a nice base to start from with 168bhp and loads of possibilities with regards to engine mods.

Now the downside to the civic is theyre hard to insure, quite common and I could probably rob the 92-95 model with a spoon if i had to but security doesnt seem to be at the top of your list of priorities!

Oh yeh kayos, while I will agree to a certain extent that a "Jap Racer" or whatever will be harder to insure (try getting a quote telling ur insurance co u dropped a 20vt in2 ur mk2 golf!!!) I don't agree with the power aspect of it. I know a lot of 1.8 NA and Turbo Jap cars that would wipe the floor with a 20VT but thats neither here nor there.

We could get really carried away here and start recommending Sunny GTiR's and all sorts. It might help if we knew the age of the original poster !

It's all very well saying get this car and that but this poor bugger has to go and insure the damn thing !

Cyberghost maybe you could give us some idea of insurance costs for a Yaris at your age then we might better be able to advise you ! Could you afford to insure a car where the insurance company would hang up as soon as you mention V-Tec ????

you are right, i didn't say i want to buy a car and mod it, so insurance doesn't really matter for me

modding is my favorite thing about cars. Id like to have something that noone else does :) as far as modding goes..

    STAY AWAY FROM YARIS'!

    They are
    a)crap
    b)useless
    c)weak
    d)tohigh
    e)Stupid looking
    f)more of a ladies car

the main aspect of modding for a sports look(excluding vans n such) is to keep it low and stylish. The yaris is neither of these, ive seen a coupld of yaris' modded roaming about dublin and i always laugh and shake my head - i dont see what the point is in wasting money on them.

If you want to mod, you really have to look into what type of car you want.

Considering your looking at a yaris, your lookin for something in the 1-1.4 ltr with rear seats.

civic (the most common modded car (mark4))
    golf
    focus
    punto (pants)
    mini (mk1)

would be the main cars you should look at. Yaris' are good for day to day cars, and are a good economical safe car, but when it comes to modding, they are the devil

disclaimer: i ment no offence to people who drive a yaris, im strictly speaking from a modding point of view

sorry, i left out a whole chunk!

modding a civic engine is great too, for 1500 or so you can get 50bhp extra onto a civic and not have to strenghten any other parts on the engine.

as far as modding goes, from my knowlege and what my dad also tells me (he knows his stuff ;p) civics are a modders dream!

My dads lookin into supercharging a civic btw (mental eh?) anyone here know if there are parts out there to do that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

I have great admiration for the Honda Twin cam engines.
The B16A is easy to increase by about 5-7 neddy's without spending any money at all. Mind you a Civic with one of these stallions in it will be well up for it anyway.

What about the Integra ? A 91 model XSi has this engine in it, a 1.6 VTEC !!! Awkward Exhaust system to do anything with! The newer 4th Gen 1.6 only had a twin-carbs - yuck ! The 4 door had a nice 1.8 PGM-Fi Twin Cam (no vtec) The 2 door is called the GS-R in the states and has VTEC.

Me, I have a beautiful 3rd Generation Prelude 4WS Si !! Smashing car ! Black - 16" Evo-R's - 2X Sony XPlode Subs with Pioneer Rear shelfs - back panels and doors with tune ups and a Black front Sony Head Unit with motorised display ! Chuck that lot in with over 1600 Watts of OOmph and she sounds pretty sweet !!!

The Mazda 323 F 1.6 Twin Cam is also no slouch, and should keep the bank manager happy

OK when I said Jap racers I basiclly meant most of the Jap marque's sportier versions. As a rule of thumb most insurance companies have a heart attack when you try to insure most of them when conpared to a 1.8 20VT. Your right though putting a knew engine such as the 1.8 20VT into a mk2 will have an effect on insurance but hey so will chipping a car.

As for 1.8 NA jap cars (when you say NA I am guessing your talking about VTec's ) wiping the floor with a 1.8 20VT that all depends on a number of factors sprint vs race, standard vs modded. But we wont get into the full in's and outs as this could keep going a hell of a long time. Vtec has its good points and the 1.8 20VT has its good points so its all down to which you prefer.

For me its my 1.8 20VT with 244.4lb/ft Torque :)

Absolutely, definitely, without question, the best kind of car for modding is.......................................

    a rented car.

    :D

There is no way that you should mutilate a car on whcih you have spent money. Most modding (as far as I can see) is carried out on puny 1 litre sh!tboxes or the like and makes them about as aesthetically appealing to own or be in close contact with as Typhoid Mary's toothbrush.

LOL, thats the only problem with VTEC cars they have a serious lack of torque, I probably produce more torque when tightening my wheelnuts by hand! The only thing I don't like about vage is power to weight, while some produce good power, they have the unfortunate task of pulling a tank like chassis around!!

Cars that come equipped as standard with the 20VT bar the MKIV GTi maybe, are generally a lot easier to insure....

    The term is 'dirtbox' tyvm!

The whole point of modding is not so much as to take a merc or a bmw and throw some speakers in and give it a new paint job. The idea behind modding is to take something that you have and mould it into something that others dont. Everyone can afford a nissan micra - not that id want one, but some people(very very foolish people) think that they can look good and desirable to other motorists. So they go spending 10000+ on it to mod it.

The truth of the fact is, There are plenty of these wanna be mod cars out in dublin that are just stupid looking and have nothing under the bonnet. A real modded car imo is one that doesnt stick out from the croud. A body kit that doesnt resemble a snow plow in anyway. Nice wheels, the car lowered and the engine tuned as to the best of its ability - thats what moddings about.

The reason most people in ireland decide to waste their money on 1 ltr cars is because they possibly dont want to ruin a nice/more expencive car? And the fact that they are throwing money away also enters my mind.

That is very nice, thank you, but it seems to be a standard M3 convertible. Again, lovely, but how has it been modded? An M3 doesn't need modding imho - I nearly bought one recently and I greatly enjoyed it (especially the mad "sport" button) and I thought it needed very little done to it, although a less numb steering rack would have been nice.

I assume you don't mean you have taken some standard BMW and fitted the M3 bits? That makes even less sense than a Micra V8/Concorde wing conversion. And I can't imagine lowering the suspension on an M3 with 19' wheels (if they are the usual M3 wheels fitted and not some smaller copy)! In fact, lowering the suspension ad plonking in bigger alloys often simply upsets the chassis compromises made so that you get better roadholding, less agile steering and a bone breaking ride if not expertly done. I have to say I simply wouldn't buy a secondhand car which has been modded to any significant degree. There are too many well cars loaded with manufacturer fitted extras cars out there to bother.

The E46 M3 been modified - it has a different exhaust rear end (at least) and I think the horseshoe rear light cluster is an add-on.
    Unsure about the rest.
